About Me

Well, I'll begin by introducing myself. My name is Michael Castrillon and I'm a student (Double major in Psychology and Art) at Queens University (for more info, just check my other profile). As you may have noticed, I am a musician. However, I am currently the only member of my band Asthenia. I design all of my album covers and write all of my music and lyrics. I play all of the instruments and record everything. I've tried to recruit members to no avail so I just keep it as a solo project for now.
So, on with the biography. I started playing guitar when I was 16 (kind of late, I know), but I learned pretty quickly. I soon started to write and record songs on a 4-track. I recorded a couple of demo albums, experimenting with various sounds. I drew my main influences from bands like Katatonia, Anathema, etc. However, I also wrote some death/black metal songs in the vein of Mayhem, Nile, etc. I later acquired a digital recording program and began to record on my computer. By this time I had officially named my solo project “Asthenia”. Since then I have recorded many demos and albums (including tons of cover songs), all in varying styles from Metal, Rock, Acoustic, etc. I still have my main influences, but I have expanded to other forms of music to keep things interesting. I especially love using acoustic guitar sounds to convey a deep emotional feeling along with the power of the electric guitar.
I continue to write music all the time, constantly being influenced by new things I hear, incorporating them into my own songs. As long as I love what I’m doing, I’ll keep doing it.
Below is a collection of all of my current album and ep covers.

My Interests

Music:

Band Members:

Michael Castrillon - All Vocals, Electric and Acoustic Guitars, Bass, Keyboards, Synth, Drum Rhythms, All Effects and Percussion.

Influences: I'm influenced by a lot of different kinds of music. My main sound comes from Metal, especially the melodic European sounds of bands like Katatonia, Anathema, Opeth, etc. For my softer songs, I'm influenced by singer/songwriter and folk music (including South American folk).
Sounds Like: Depending on which song you are listening to, I can sound like a variety of things (often drastically different). I can go from soft fingerpicked acoustic passages to heavy fastpicked metal to melodic guitar harmonies (sometimes all in one song!) All of these elements and more are mixed in together and sprinkled with my own style to create Asthenia. I don't like being limited to one style, so I experiment all the time and try to push myself into new directions.
