About Me

Marguerite Maria Rivas has been writing poetry for fifteen years. In addition to writing for the page, she writes for, and improvises on the stage. Marguerite is a member of the Performance Collective, Elektromotif along with Wil Wynn, Doug Principato, and frequent guests, Peter Echanique, Andre Martinez, and Ed Jackson, among other world-class musicians and classy wordsmiths. She is also a founding member of Sepoy Rebellion, the poets' collective. With instrumentalist and composer Doug Principato (a/k/a) the Grandpepper of Reality, percussionist AndrJ Martinez, and poet Wil Wynn, she works as an improvisational poet, having recently performed at such venues as Performance Space 122, The Henry Gregg Gallery, The Unitarian Church, and The Bowery Poetry Club.Marguerite has also performed nationally and has won numerous grants and awards for her poetry.Marguerite's poetry and prose has been published in such journals as Earth's Daughters, The America's Review, Waterways, and The Multicultural Review, among others. She is widely known as the de facto Poet Laureate of Staten Island, and has recently completed a manuscript of lyric poetry, Laughter, Hope & a Sock in the Eye.Marguerite, who holds a Doctor of Arts and Letters from Drew University, also writes long, collagistic poems. She is crossing her fingers and throwing salt over her shoulder awaiting word on the publication of her book-length poem, For the Yous of Sarah Whitman. In addition to the finger-crossing and salt-throwing, she performs a weird ritual having to do with praying to a long-gone holy man whose body was shipped to France and mislabeled. She won't reveal everything about this peculiar ritual, but it has something to do with praying and eating pound cake.Marguerite is indebted to her loyal friends and supporters, especially her long-time friend and fellow poet Wil Wynn, her archivist, Bernard King, and her collaborator on the spoken word tracks on this page, instrumentalist Doug Principato.Marguerite doesn't usually refer to herself in the third person, but well, you know, it's an artist's bio, and it's sometimes hard to peek out from behind the tall phragmites, step out into the sun, and imitate her beloved Staten Island oysters by doing a little broadcast spawning. Out with you then, poems and sound files; the sun warms her face now. Here’s a URL to an upcoming series of events: http://www.freesummerfest.org/Literary_Artists.html
