Alani

Alani first began placing parts of her soul onto paper in the form of poetry in the fourth grade and has continued to use her innermost thoughts as an outlet for her soul to ultimately speak and be free. She began performing regularly at local venues, poetry tours and open mics in 2000 as an undergrad at UC Davis. While attending UC Davis Alani was active in Mujeres Ayudando la Raza and an active member of UC Davis' spoken word collective- ill-literacy. Through ill-literacy, she performed at the First Annual Womyn Speak poetry series and performed at the End-Dependence Tour when featured in Northern California. Alani's powerful poetry was also a spotlight in the 2005 California State Fair, Step it Up Talent Show where she tied for first place.
In Sacramento, Alani is currently working on her solo CD project titled "My Life", scheduled to be released soon. Alani has one book, "My Life, the evolution of a 4th Grade Poetess"; it comes in age appropriate volumes, grades 4-8, 9-12, and college poetry. She anticipates being published within the year.
Alani can be found performing throughout Northern California, in Sacramento, several Bay Area venues, specifically Mouth Off Open Mic Wednesdays at the AirLounge in Oakland. Additionally, Alani was featured in Hollywood,CA at the CA Latino Caucus Institutes 5th Annual Gala, performing a piece dedicated to the our valiant soldiers fighting in the Middle East. She also performed at Juneteenth in San Jose, CA. In May 2006, Alani was the featured Latina poet at Speak Out: Women of Color Poetry Night sponsored by La Raza Cultural Days and Lambda Theta Nu Sorority, Inc. at UC Davis. Alani is a UC Davis alumna; she earned two bachelor degrees in Political Science and Community and Regional Development, class of 2002. She is currently pursuing her Master of Public Administration degree at the University of Southern California and will graduate in December 2008.
