For over a decade, I worked as a psychologist with people with severe mental disorders in state and private mental hospitals. In recent years, as a social work professor, I have been trying to raise my students' awareness of this country's growing disparities in wealth, power, and access to essential resources. Obviously, these disparities and the resulting deprivation affect mental health and other forms of human behavior and functioning.
Like a some other MySpacers, I see America transforming into a flashy trash culture absorbed with instant gratification and rabid consumerism. Bombarded by advertisements, celebrity and brand name worship, fake news, and cartoon political campaigns, is it surprising that we wake up to find our economy collapsing and ourselves trapped in the bloody occupation of a country that did nothing to us?
I find it disappointing that most human service professionals are caught up working in their narrow specializations, making money, and advancing their careers while ignoring the spiraling decline of our society. Shouldn't we be trying to reverse these trends?
