About Me

Mike Cooper was born and raised in Washington State. In May 2006 he retired the rank of Lieutenant with the Shoreline Fire Department after over 25 years of service. He was named the Washington State Firefighter of the Year in 1997.Currently Mike teaches high school Fire Safety vocational education. Mike served 4 terms in the state House of Representatives. While serving in the legislature he chaired the Fisheries, Ecology and Parks Committee and the Financial Institutions and Insurance Committee. In addition, he served on the Transportation and Energy and Utilities committees. He has been recognized as the 1999 Maritime Elected Official of the Year, 1999 Washington State Labor Council Legislator of the Year, and 2003 Inland Boatman's Union Legislator of the Year.In 2004 Mike brought together the oil industry, environmentalists, shippers, labor unions, tribes and state agencies to craft legislation to protect Washington's shores from the devastation of an oil spill. He envisioned protecting our shores and clean waters via preventive measures, rather than just response efforts. He succeeded in leading various interests to consensus on a new, zero-spills strategy which was signed by Governor Locke in March.2004 also saw the culmination of Mike's 8 years of work on recreation funding. Gas tax revenues provide funding for trails and other recreation facilities, but the money was being distributed in a manner that wasn't fair to all users. Mike convened a group of interests who had been locked in disagreement for decades. After over a year of meetings and negotiations, they were able to hammer out a bi-partisan compromise that more equitably distributed recreation funds. In July of 2005, Governor Gregoire appointed Mike to chair the Washington Oil Spill Advisory Council, a diverse group of stakeholders responsible for advising the Governor and legislature on spill prevention, preparedness and response issues. In addition to chairing the Oil Spill Advisory Council, Mike Cooper is President of the Board at Transportation Choices Coalition and served as chair of the Snohomish County Charter Review Commission.Mike and Chrystal have 3 grown children and 2 granddaughters.
