Karan Seraph

No, really, I am that old; I just spent a lot of time dreaming.

About Me

30-something Old School Goth/Art Fag with more outfits than I have occasions to wear them and more things (spooky knick-knacks, books, etc.) than I have places to put them, struggling to support my non-paying career as an author with a day job while simultaneously going to school for interactive media design.

My Interests

literature, comic books, theology, manga, writing, the gothic aesthetic, web design, listening to music, dancing, sewing, crafting, furniture refinishing, multimedia fine art pieces, miniatures and doll houses; collecting: Barbie, vintage clothing, angels, female action figures, and Coca-Cola memorabilia.

I'd like to meet:

People who say things like: "let's share rent in NYC", "We're about the same size; you can borrow some of my clothes", "Everyone has issues, I can tolerate yours; you tolerate mine", "What are some other cool 80s bands I should listen to?", "want to go to a show or concert with me?", "Nice boots."People who: don't partake of illicit substances in my presence. do not use my car to smuggle without informing me of the things they are carrying. are friendly, even if we're in different scenes. like to learn. read. think it's good when pretty boys are all over each other. are passionate about their own likes and will teach me about them. show an interest in the things I am passionate about. don't grope or kiss without some previous, sober, agreement to such actions. understand that there are better ways to effect change in the world than shooting kids at school or performing suicide bombings in civilian areas (but kamikaze style attacks in time of war are OK, not that we should endorse escalation of differences to war). have a sense of humor. get my jokes. are wise enough to admit they may not always be correct. are intelligent. do not expect others to conform. are just cool.

Music:

Classical (Schubert's Trio in E! Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty, and so on), 60's Experimental Rock (the Doors, Velvet Underground), Awesome song writers (Leonard Cohen), Glam (Bowie, Lou Reed, ET AL), Punk (especially with real political messages), Post-Punk (Joy Division, The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, ET AL), New Wave (particularly if the artists are gay and British or worked with gay, Brit artists, or were just Brits everyone thought were gay. Like Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys and related projects: Erasure, Electronic, etc.), Goth (Rozz more than Valor, Sisters and certain clones), Industrial (some more than others. love Nine Inch Nails), Darkwave, Ethereal, Shoegazer/Dream Pop, Neo-Goth (select artists only. Like Razed in Black), J-Rock/Visual Kei (if the actual music is of a style or fusion of styles I would otherwise like. I like Malice Mizer as well as Dir En Gray), New Punk and its cousins (My Chemical Romance for one).

Movies:

anime, classic Disney, Tim Burton, old horror movies, various culty things, ones with plots about misfits and outcasts, ones based on books I liked. Waxwork II is the best movie, ever! Moulin Rouge and Velvet Goldmine rock!

Television:

Cartoon Network and Anime Network (shows with cute, angsty characters). Various shows in horror/fantasy/science-fiction genres (SGA). CSI (original Vegas, definitely not Miami). Lost. Ghost Hunters. The Office. Previously: Twin Peaks, Buffy, Angel, Firefly, X-Files, Voyager, Enterprise, Xena, Trading Spaces, Farscape, Stargate SG-1.

Books:

Favorite authors: Neil Gaiman, Anne Rice, Clive Barker, Robert Jordan, Vladmir Nabokov, Albert Camus, Jeanette Winterson, Angela Carter and Herrmann Hesse. Have to add J.K. Rowling and Lemony Snicket.

Heroes:

Neil Gaiman, because I want to write stuff that is a mythic and universal as his work, Poppy Z. Brite, because she had networking skills at a young age and published a novel by, like, 19-years-old or something, Madonna, for her ratio of talent to business sense, which has worked well for her.

I noticed today that many people make rambling chaotic blog entries while deprived of sleep. It's wonderful. I think it's funny that Davey Havok signs 'DxH', but that's one of those unintentionaly hum...

band names

My brother said he'll have a band called 'I am more Gothic than you', but it will not play 'gothic' music. Ha ha! He needs to learn to play his guitar first.
