About Me

"I've been playing since I was 7. When I was in college (14) was when I really started putting a lot of effort and time into music (I was practicing 8 hours a dayfor almost 4 years). When I was 18, I started listening to jazz, most specifically Django Reinhardt, who really changed my views on a lot of things music. I started taking lessons with Mike Dana (who studied under Joe Pass) and went full on into jazz theory and study (up until this point, I was classically trained). Around this time, I started playing with a lot of different groups, Patrick Contreas, Zambra, Andre Bush. Then I moved to Bakersfield a few years ago where I continued to perform with various groups (Velorio, Kobalt Kobra, Hitchcock, etc) until I went to Europe and performed for a month on a cruise ship. After I got back, I moved back to Fresno for a short time, where I started reworking old material that I had written in college for my second and third albums (Acoustic and Electric). I then moved back to Bakersfield to start the groups that will eventually perform this music, and that's my musical career."Jay Smith
