I am here for Friends

About Me

When I was about a year and a half old I got really sick with what could have been meningitis or even scarlet fever. This left me blind and deaf. Anne Sullivan taught me to communicate to the world through discipline. Now I am working as an advocate for the rights of women and the disabled.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

I've met many people, from scientists like Alexander Graham Bell to actors like Charlie Chaplin to political leaders like Grover Cleveland and Lyndon Johnson. But I am always interested in meeting with young people - usually in a lecture hall - to talk about disabilities and extinguish the pervasive myths that plague our society.

Music:

Unfortunately, I've never been one for music...

Movies:

Movies have never much struck my fancy either.

Television:

My friends watch American Idol religiously, but once again this is a subject upon which I have no comment.

Books:

Finally, a topic I can weigh in on with some authority. I am very fond of all literature and can read fluently in English, French, German, Greek, and Latin. I am particularly fond of the works of Charles Dickens and the American humorist Mark Twain. I would suggest reading stories of people who overcame disabilities. The story of Ragnhild Kaata, a deafblind Norwegian girl, was greatly inspirational to me.

Heroes:

Anne Sullivan, of course. And all those striving with a disability.
