I am here for Dating, Serious Relationships, Friends and Networking

About Me

I've recently completed my doctorate in clinical psychology at Kent State University. I do research on internalized homophobia and bullying, with some experience in researching trauma and HIV risk prevention. In the future, I'd like to extend my research into the application of mindfulness techniques for the reduction of internalized homophobia in gay men and lesbians. In my free time, I read. Lots. All the time. Milton, Proust, Joyce, Derrida, Foucault, Baudrillard, Genet, etc. Also love newer authors, like Dennis Cooper, Mary Gaitskill, J.T. LeRoy, Chuck Pahluniuk, Jeanette Winterson, etc. I'm not all serious.... if you know any of the authors, you know they range from the metaphysical to the depraved. I'm happy carrying on a discussion anywhere in that spectrum. I'm a vegan Buddhist activist sort, watch inde or foreign films, listen to inde or art house type rock, and am a killer of a vegan chef. Others usually describe me as very calm, peaceful, etc., and I am a pretty mellow guy. I like to think I see the best in people, though my tendency to assume others are forthright and responsible sometimes leads to trouble.I'm new to San Francisco for a position researching compulsive sexuality among gay men at a UCSF affiliated institute. I'm also wrapping up licensure, so may or may not take on individual therapy patients in the future (this is not an advertisement, though!)

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

guys to hang with that can passionately discuss politics, literature, or philosophy over coffee, but can also have a good time at the clubs. Someone who drinks good beer, and not just hard liquor. Okay, a decent wine works, too. Too many people are apathetic.... about their lives, their interests, or just the world around them. I'm not into that scene.

Music:

Xiu Xiu, Broken Social Scene, Mazzy Star, Azure Ray, Morrissey, TTC, Yourcodenameis: milo, Death above 1979, Pinback, Team Sleep, Postal Service, Kings of Leon, Feist, John Frusciante, the Black Eyes, Belle & Sebastian, the Butchies, Le Tigre, Sleater-Kinney, Elliott Smith, Sonic Youth, Kings of Leon, And You Will Know us by the Trail of Dead, Electric 6, Bjork, and more. Not always in that order.

Movies:

Autumn Sonata, Wild Strawberries, anything else Bergman, My Own Private Idaho, Blue Velvet, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Mysterious Skin, The Living End, Tarnation, Prospero's Books, Fire (I <3 Deepa Mehta), Donnie Darko, I <3 Huckabees, The Pillowbook, Edward II (Jarmann), Me and You and Everyone We Know, Happiness, The House of Yes, Fire, Blue, White, Red, Ma Vie en Rose, Muriel's Wedding, Secretary

Books:

All sorts, like Milton's Paradise Lost, Marcel Proust, James Joyce, William Blake, Dennis Cooper, JT LeRoy, Chris Kraus (Everyone should read "I Love Dick"), Nella Larson, Zora Neale Hurston, Chuck Pahluniak, Tom Spanbauer, Jean Genet, Mary Gaitskill, Haruki Murakami, Banana Yoshimoto, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Jorge Luis Borges, Anne Carson, Colm Toibin, Jeanette Winterson, then in terms of theorists, I love Sedgwick, Deleuze, Butler, Baudrillard, Lacan, Foucault, Barthes, and more traditionally, Nabakov, Frye, etc. I'm pretty open, from classics to contemporary, so long as it's good. I also have a soft spot for Russian lit. - Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Pushkin, Gogol (especially Gogol!), Lermontov. Also like some Buddhist authors: Ayya Khema, Nyaponika Thera, Bhante Gunaratana, Dogen

Heroes:

Aung San Suu Kyi, Thich Nhat Hanh, Mother Jones, Harry Hay, Michelangelo Signorile, Urvashi Vaid, Kate Bornstein. Ingmar Bergman died recently (7/30/07), which is a tragedy.I miss Lawrence, Kansas.... this is a fire-breather on a streetcorner downtown, outside a remodeled movie theater. Before a fetish show. Yeah, small town Kansas.

Ways I Would Directly Be Impacted by a 3rd Term Bush

As I'm following a lot of the idiocy of the Right during this run up to the election, I've been pondering ways I would be directly impacted. Well, harmed, actually. Most of these are things that would...

The Games Republicans Play....

A bit of disgusting Republican pro-torture ideology from CSPAN... though I admit, this is easier to be pissed at than Obama's newfound idiocy over wanting to expand faith-based programs (even to progr...

Eco Rant

I'm watching some new show, currently (new to me, at least), in which Patrick Wharburton (sp?), whom you may know as Elaine's meathead boyfriend from Seinfeld, is having his family's home remodeled to...

106 books meme

A fun meme I came across.... Its the "the top 106 books most often marked as "returned unread" by LibraryThing's users." The books I have read are in italics. Unfinished books are struck through (I wo...

Vaccines and autism

Some of you may have been aware of a recent show that aired on ABC, called Eli Stone.  The premise of the show isn't that important - modern day prophet, blah blah blah, hallucinations guide "mor...
