About Me
It has been said that suffering builds character, while character is the measure of a man. These words are emphatically proven in the story of Syc The Genesis. Born in Manhattan, NY and raised in Far Rockaway, NY, Syc was raised and grew up alongside the hip-hop culture. At the age of 8, he first realized that hip-hop ran through his veins while watching his older cousin rap and breakdance at various New York City playgrounds. The culture immediately consumed him and, emulating his older cousin, he began to write rhymes and partake in various freestyle sessions. While growing up in Wavecrest Projects, Syc began to earn the respect of his peers younger and older alike and continued to sharpen his craft and passion. Although faced with lifes harshest obstacles, to include poverty and homelessness, Syc would show resilience. He would eventually graduate high school and enter the United States Army keeping hip hop in his heart all the while and solidifying the foundation of his career which, more than 10 years later, still shows no signs of slowing down.
Nicknamed Syco by his friends at the early age of 6, this brash and outspoken Puerto Ricans' professional career as an MC began while stationed in Fort Benning, Georgia. Under the name Syc Omega, he completed his first independent release entitled The Basement Chronicles in 1998. This 9-song EP garnered rave reviews in both the southern region where he resided as well as the northern region in which he was raised. The release spawned a hit single, Mistress, which eventually began to receive radio airplay on WRHU 88.7 FM and WNYU 91.9 FM in New York City. His buzz continued to grow and, after serving his country for 3 years, Syc returned to Queens, NY where he continued to refine his creative ability as an MC and focused on becoming more knowledgeable about the music industry. Always pushing himself to further his career, Syc became involved with various independent record companies as an intern. He returned to Columbus, Georgia 2 years later with his sights set on making an impact on the culture that raised him. Using his newfound knowledge and continued passion for hip-hop, Syc formed Front Line Soldier Music, an independently owned and operated company. His 2003 release under the new label entitled "The Introduction" spawned several singles that earned local radio airplay on WFXE 104.9 FM, and eventually lead to Syc being crowned the stations Freestyle Friday Champion for several weeks. In addition to local television appearances and performances, Syc began to receive praise and recognition throughout the region, and gained notoriety for his clever wordplay and ability to tell stories through his rhymes. Always remaining consistent, Syc released his second project under Front Line Music entitled "Retaliation" later that same year. This critically acclaimed release spawned several singles that received local radio airplay, further opening the eyes and ears of the streets as well as many within the industry. After numerous local radio, television and club performances, Syc eventually caught the attention of DJ Kaye Dunaway (current Assistant Program Director/on-air personality - WBFA 101.3 The Beat, Columbus, GA.). After introducing him to various club, radio and mixtape DJs, Syc quickly gained recognition in various regions throughout the country via countless radio and mixtape appearances.
Having firmly established himself as a dominant force in hip hop, Syc relocated to Upstate NY in 2004 and continued to flourish. He has since released "The First and The Last" mixtape and has made numerous appearances on mixtapes from DJs such as DJ Showtime (Monsters Inc/Smith Bros/Core DJs), DJ Young Legend (Black Wallstreet/Southern Grind) and Wiz Hoffa (Noize Mob DJs), as well as appeared in interviews with magazines and websites such as Hiphopgame.com and Grind Mode Magazine (for which he served as a guest contributing writer). His experience as a live performer is equally as impressive, having opened for the likes of Mos Def, T.I. and Marques Houston. His appeal as an MC can be accredited to his distinct delivery, broad range of lyrical subjects, and his unique and vivid personality. Under the new name Syc The Genesis (representative of a NEW beginning), you can expect to see his story unfold in an intriguing and often dramatic fashion. With an onslaught of upcoming projects and ventures, Syc hopes to use his drive, determination and experience to create a hip hop movement while taking his place amongst the greatest rappers of all time.
