I was Born and raised In Jackson Miss. the son of a baptist minister, I lived in one of the birth places of many types of music ; gospel ,Blues ,Jazz , R&B ,and Soul. I lived only a stones throw from world famous Malaco Records. It was the label of the Jackson Southernaires, whom my father was an original member . I grew up in the church, and at an early age I was exposed to music that would later shape the NU-Soul sound. Music like , Jazz from my father's cousin Ramsey Lewis influenced and inspired me . Other artists who influenced me were Herbie Handcock, Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway , Nat Cole , Latimore ,Johnny Taylor ,Sam Cook . They made the basic framework for my Jazzy Souhtern soul .I began my love of Turntablisim, Rap, Breaking, Hip-Hop and Graffiti after I recieved my first pair of technique 1200s .In order to pursue musical aspirations I moved to L.A. and lived in long beach and Compton Ca. where my style of B-boying and lyrics won me appearances at various venues from mosque #35 ,#27 to the "Good-Life", where positive lyrics were the norm not the exception to the rules. There I earned the
name M-hotep by my multifacceted display of many talents; dance, poetry, visual art, Singing . My group Nu-soul collective
is an expression of this love of R&B, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Turntablism, Breaking, capoeira and above all else ...
