Formed in the Summer of 2005, Cargo Culte is a new band on the scene that brings together influences from the West Coast and the UK, but with the edgy style of their hometown, NYC. When guitarist Chris Botta and vocalist Brendan Tateishi started writing songs, they knew they had something special and enlisted some friends to do a few downtown shows, which were well received. Named after the song Cargo Culte by Serge Gainsbourg, the band had an eye towards the recording studio from the beginning.
Featuring Nick James on bass and Tom Costagliola on drums, Cargo Cultes eponymous debut EP kicks off with Justine, a hard-hitting love song that suggests a May-December romance, yet may also inspire references to the Marquis de Sades infamous heroine.
The shimmering ballad, Back and Forth follows with a chilly intro that melts into sculpted choruses and layered instrumentals suggesting Travis if they were to borrow some vintage King Crimson licks. The song recounts a trip to the Northeast with searching emotion and tries to shine a light on the question of whether we can return to our roots, and if so, what will we find?
Been Through It All is next, a song which thrives on the exciting interplay between the lead voice and the angular riffing of the guitar. Describing the highs and lows of a blossoming relationship in all its newfound wonder, the song laments with cheeky charm how lovers can still come away with the feeling that theyve Been Through It All.
Cargo Culte lets it rip on the final cut with the Clash influenced, Rapture. The lyrics reveal a slyly ironic screed directed point blank at the political, economic and moral shambles that comprise todays White House.
The band is looking forward to bringing their energetic yet melodic live show to local venues while they continue to write new material for a full-length disc. Bridging romance and indignation, passion and knowing detachment, along with some much needed humor, Cargo Culte is a band with a human element and a multi-faceted approach.
