About me:

I'm an artist and a fine art photographer who believes that we each change the world by how we respond to those around us daily. The spiritual teacher who has most influenced my daily life, and who is Japanese always says, "Put out the fires in your own heart first. Until you can do that nothing really changes in the world." I think the mind is a powerful tool but without engaging the sacred you're just moving around furniture.
Challenging the popular notion of absolute reality for me has been somewhat like falling through the rabbit hole, and discovering that so called absolute reality is not absolute, nor often even reality. I'm interested in exploring these directions in my fine art work, and in the continuing investigation of dreams and all the things that whirl behind and beneath the surface of life, the connection between the seen and the unseen.

Who I'd like to meet:Other artists and spiritual seekers who journey off the beaten path.

"In a real sense all life is inter-related. All men are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be, and you can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be. This is the inter-related structure of reality."
Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

BIG FISH: Me and my sister used to have this thing called the Big Fish Story. It came from our father who liked to make things a bit bigger than life. He'd spin a good tale without anyone knowing it was a tale. Sometime this created anger, sometimes laughter. Most of his tales took awhile for us to figure out-- sometimes years, sometimes forever. Some days we would laugh and make up stories of our own, until one of us would say, "Come on! Is that a big fish story?" We did this even as we got older, but we were always careful to fess up and eventually tell the truth. As for my dad, well, his secrets died with him. He was always somewhat of an enigma to me. This is why BIG FISH is one of my favorite movies.

White Pigeon, Michigan: Mother,Roxann ( the dork holding all the papers), Ralph, Melissa (who became a hot cheerleader in Jr. High). You'd never know it by looking at this photo.

Excerpt from Journal notes : The Arrival

I run that last quarter mile
still not looking down
at the changes in the terrain,
the places where the grass disappears
into dirt and stone,
the places where the "I"fears losing its footing.
I keep running,
further now,
much further than before.

I pass the tree yet still feeling it's roots all around me,
glowing.
breathing.
being.
Then the fear becomes a knowing
that there were and always will be
these things on the road
for they are part of what is.

As I leave the last glimmer of light behind me
the tree turns into a silhouette
and then into darkness.
I head back to this place called home
where my suitcases are still packed, ready to go.

And I know I may never run on that field again,
but I will always see that tree standing before me,
it's presence quietly
reminding me
that now is all that is.

And the "I" understands
it is like the tree
grounded and rooted in earth.

How fast I go
is of no consequence.
I only need to be,
for being is arriving.

Missy and Sissy. I love this picture because that was my sister,
always trying to lead the way.

Ma & Dad. They look happy here before we all arrived on the scene. My dads mother was from an upper middle class, very white English family and my mother was a hot blooded Hispanic/ Eastern European mix from a poor family. I remember some of the racist comments until this day. But we all got my dad's whiter-than-white skin, so most people left us alone, except for my brother Edward who looked like a little Native American Indian.

Me at 15. The dream didn't last. This photo was taken shortly before my parents divorced, and I'd already left home and came out West alone. Some kid stopped me on the street and asked me if he could take my photo. I posed for him in front of a window for 15 minutes. Later he gave me two prints. I've saved those photographs because I don't have any others from that period in my life.

Television:

Thank God for DVRS.
I pick up late night TV rays when I can.
Current: PLANET EARTH, THE MOST AMAZING DOCUMENTARY on "planet earth" ever made, period. Nothing comes even remotely close to this except perhaps "GENESIS" the French documentary on the creation of the universe and the evolution of life. This documentary is also breathtaking on the visuals.
"TRUDELL", is an incredible documentary every American should see. It documents the life and work of American Indian activist and poet JOHN TRUDELL. This is on my top 25 list of best documentaries, with lots of historical footage it's both inspiring and brilliant.
current:
Twilight Zone ,Rod Serling, 1959-1964.
Not the badly written 1985 series.
Mystery, Masterpiece Theater: ALL
Democracy Now,
Sundance :The Green,
Animal planet,

Great Comedy :
Dave Chapelle,Doug Stanhope, Borat, Richard Jeni,
Marilyn Martinez, Eddie Izzard , George Lopez, George Carlin,
Dirty Love by Jenny McCarthy rocks. I don't care what the stupid
reviews said. it made me laugh my ass off.
RICHARD JENI YOU WILL BE DEEPLY MISSED.
You were a brilliant comic and a force of nature on stage.
Not just funny, but smart and you spoke the truth. You have left the world a wonderful legacy of laughter. Your hysterical Red Wine and PMS joke is a classic. God Bless you Richard, the world is a much lonelier, darker place without you in it. Richare Jeni: 1957-2007

Books:

To many to list here. Art, philosophy books, poetry books.
"The Little Prince " Antoine de Saint Exupey
(original french version).
Masaur Emoto, "The Message from Water."
Robert Johnsons books: He, She, We ,
The Fisher KING & The Handless Maiden.
Michael Tamura, "You Are The Answer."
Conversations with God: neal walsh
"Fairy Tales and Myths," "Myths of Light." Joseph Cambell,
Einstein's Wife, Alan Watts, Timothy Leary, Rumni.
Nietzsche, William Blake, FRIDA's journals.
Dorothy Parker.
I love Bukowski.
His raw, honest face is as brutal as his prose.
I suppose in many ways his prose remind me of my own
childhood and leaving home so young.
He was a real drunken bastard,
but he knew it and he wrote about it.
He didn't hide behind it.
It was moving to hear him read one of my favorite poems of his,
"Bluebird" in the documentary, "Born Into This."
There appeared to be a real evolution of his soul towards the end of his life that was clearly expressed in his words. Thankfully, I think that he found some peace.
currently::
re-read, "Myths of Light." by Joseph Campbell.
It examines heroic myths and Eastern Metaphors of the Eternal.
It also shows the great divide of East and West in Religion and why.
Personally I don't believe in Western religion.
In his book,"Myths of Light." Mr Campbell focuses in particular
on the idea of the transcendent World Soul as it appears
throughout Asian religion, as the Buddha mind,
the Tao, or Brahman.
A highly recommended read.
