About Me

THE ORGINS OF ILL LUCID ONSET: Ill Lucid Onset comes from the Northwestern United States, residing in the beautiful city of Portland, Oregon. Members spent their childhoods in Southern California, Vancouver, Washington, Portland, Oregon, and Anchorage, Alaska. They played music and sports and even were involved in community theatre; a number of factors led them here.
Nothing compares to the genuine artists that simply wants to write good songs for themselves, friends, family, and fans! The guys began in 2002 after each of them having roles in past bands and projects. Singer/guitarist, Ryan Aiello wrote a lot of songs that past year when moving back to the Portland metro area, and good buddy, Nate Vick (bass & keys/2004-2007), agreed to record them with the infamous music engineer Bob Moon (Tooth and Nail Records/Fender Center) and Tim Denny (Hyperstatic Union). By the fall, Tim Hensley (drums and other percussions) and Marcus Young (guitars, noise, BGV's) had joined the soulful, authentic group, and with the release of their first full-length project ("Something Unconditional", February, 2005) the band was born.
Originally appearing under the names "Kocauli and "Starbelly", the band eventually settled on "Ill Lucid Onset" also known as I.L.O. Tim Hensley is our Alaskan boy, and is formally trained in music theory. Marcus Young is one of our local guys who not only can pull off amazing guitar sounds, but actually creates his own sounds through modifications of pedals and his own designed pick-ups. Ryan works for a university in the Portland area and actually does counseling on the side. Really he just thinks a lot and loves people. Marcus Phelps (bass), a Portland Native, joined Ill Lucid Onset in January 2008 and has helped the guys take the music to a completely different level! It is amazing how tight this crew has developed with his influence!
Ill Lucid Onset has also had the honor to be on two compilation albums put out by Velvet Blue Music, Huntington Beach, California; Burning Ears (2002) and Tables Will Turn (2006). They have also had the privilege to connect and play with fellow dreamers, Starflyer 59 (Tooth and Nail Records), Kat Jones (Velvet Blue Music), Aspen Hollow (Fresno, California), and Joy Electric (Tooth and Nail Records).
More recently, Ill Lucid Onset has been fortunate to hit college radio with their song 'Never Enough' (2005, Something Unconditional Mix) Of course, with much thanks to Shut Eye Records!
And just think, this is just a few things about the guys from Ill Lucid Onset. They say they tried that whole hipster "cool-club we're rock stars thing." Over time they saw that just wasn't them! Now they are Ill Lucid Onset (i.L.O.) and they simply want to connect with people and write cool music.
Ill Lucid Onset is as loud and artful as it has to be, to drown out some of this numb stagnate world of music. This is not just rock music; this is thoughtful music, bigger than itself, wise beyond its years, atmospheric rock in space and soulfulness for this time in the 21st century.

Behind the Song: The girl from Livermore

All I will say is . . . this song reminds me of the Scarlet "A" I wear on my heart . . . The girl from Livermore is about temptation and she is a real person whom I had an experience with. I love and ...

Behind the Song: Ockham

'Ockham' is the oldest song, written by Ryan Aiello, on the album 'Something Unconditional.' This is a song that Ryan has done a couple different versions of with a couple other bands - Kocauli (1997-...

Behind the Song: My State

'My State' is simply about love and humility. It's about being honest with one's self and seeking out truth, which we believe is not relative. Musically, this song has a mellow acoustic vibe and is on...

Behind the Song: Somewhere In-Between

'Somewhere In-Between' is a song that was written in the spirit of pure art and freedom. We've been told it is the song that really doesn't "fit" the album. With the exception of the drums, played by ...

Behind the Song: Selfish Rhymes

'Selfish Rhymes' was written within the same day as 'Never Enough.' I think I was having some sort of bipolar day. 'Never Enough' focusing so much on how I'm tired and sick of certiain parts of music ...

Behind the Song: Never Enough

Ryan Aiello wrote 'Never Enough' in the Spring of 2002. This was a song that came together within 15 minutes. From a musical persective, we always saw this as a solid "rock" song, but nothing rad...
