.. World renowned musician, composer and producer Ray Chew is Musical Director for 3 network television series – NBC’s The Singing Bee, Showtime At the Apollo and BET’s Sunday Best. He is also responsible for the music in Donald Trump’s Miss USA, Miss Universe and Miss Teen USA pageants. Ray’s most recent turn at musical director for BET’s ground breaking event – The BET Honors – features a piano duet with Stevie Wonder, in addition to signature performances by Gladys Knight, Brian McKnight and Jill Scott and John Legend.
Ray Chew has been at the helm of award winning musical events – live and televised – performing with countless legendary artists such as Barry Manilow, Sting, James Taylor, the 4-Tops, Dionne Warwick, Elvis Costello, Smokey Robinson, Pastor Shirley Caesar, Kirk Franklin, Mary J. Blige, Aretha Franklin and Quincy Jones. Ray’s other recent televised performances as Musical Director of the 2007 BET Awards and the 7th Annual BET Celebration of Gospel resulted in critical acclaim throughout the artist community and an NAACP Image Award.
Ray’s most recent work behind the scenes includes the original score of MTV Film’s summer hit, “Super Sweet 16 – The Movie”. Ray has also musically directed unique live performances for major music industry events including: the Entertainment Industry Foundation’s fundraiser for Colon Cancer Research – Produced by Ken Erhlich; The 1st Annual Concert for Katrina – Produced by Wynton Marsalis; The Recording Academy Honors – Produced by the Grammy Foundation; and the New Jersey Bergen Performing Art’s Center Spring Gala for Arts and Education – Produced by Chew Entertainment.
In addition to these specialty performances, Ray maintains his tenure as Musical Director for the Apollo Theater Foundation, recently acting as co-producer for their annual spring benefit concert. He produced and performed a Tribute to James Brown featuring Wyclef Jean, Jill Scott, Mos Def and Maceo Parker on the World Famous Apollo Theater stage.
Ray’s recording career spans from legendary artists, Diana Ross and Donny Hathaway through Alicia Keys’s three Grammy award-winning albums. He has orchestrated for and appeared on many television specials including the 44th, 46th and 47th Annual Grammy Awards, VH-1’s Save the Music Concert, MTV Unplugged, Nobel Peace Prize Concert and the World Music Awards. Ray also performed with Grammy Award winner, Rihanna, in six countries as pianist and conductor on her hit “Unfaithful” at various award shows and international mainstays Top of the Pops and Hit Machine. Ray’s most grand orchestrating work to date was for “The Diary of Alicia Keys” farewell tour performance at L.A.’s Hollywood Bowl where he conducted a 63-piece orchestra for a special DVD presentation, to be released in 2008.
Ray also serves as a National Trustee for NARAS and co-chairs their Education and Diversity Committees. But it’s at his state of the art recording studio – Vision House – where Ray creates scores and produces music for film, television and albums. Vision House maintains the latest in software and hardware with a live room including a Baldwin Grand Piano, Hammond B3 Organ, Roland V-Drums, Pro-Tools HD and Logic Audio.
