About Me

There are many words one could use to describe Matthew R. Staley: acrobat, actor, clown, composer, dancer, magician, mime, musician, physical comedian, poet, singer, stunt performer, voiceover artist...It is difficult to categorize a performer who spans so many different genres and yet Matthew R. Staley truly is a "Jack-of-all-trades" when it comes to performing.Matthew's childhood was spent moving every few years because of his father's job in the Navy. He was born in Florida, lived in Rhode Island and California but spent the majority of his young life in Virginia. Matthew graduated with a degree in Theatre from James Madison University where he also put together his band, The Bygones. After graduation, Matthew moved to New York City where he has been living and performing every since.

Influences: Matthew finds inspiration from all kinds of music: from classical composers like Ralph Vaughan Williams to modern bands like System of a Down; from singers like The McGuire Sisters and Sam Cooke to gangsta raps by NWA and positive raps by Me Phi Me.
Sounds Like: As an actor, Matthew has often been compared to Gary Oldman because of his ability to transform himself into each new character he plays. He also bears the resemblance of a younger Anthony Hopkins. As a musician, Matthew has been compared to Dave Matthews and Ani DiFranco because of the percussive nature of his strumming and the alternate tunings he sometimes employs. As a physical comedian, he has been compared to Bill Irwin, Charlie Chaplin and Jackie Chan.

Life as of 8/15/06

During one of the final performances of Nevermore, we were deep into the play when a commotion of sorts began in the audience. At first, I thought it was the usual fare of inattentive patrons or worse...
