Band Together For CHD!!
The CHDA Teen Crew a student-run non-profit 501 (c) 3 all volunteer organization dedicated to promoting CHD awareness, research, education and support. Working with high schools, community colleges, and universities in the United States, we hope to empower students to make a difference.
Like others who donate their time and energy to raise Awareness for Congenital Heart Defects, we are often called the heart of CHDA, Inc. Here at CHDA, Inc., we work together as a family, but still have fun! We work alongside faculty and staff, bonding with our peers. As the new generation, we work to make an impact for all those affected by congenital heart defects and increase awareness among the healthy youth about the huge difference they can make in the life of another.
Today:
Of the nearly 4 million babies born each year in the US, about 40,000 will be known to have congenital heart defects (CHD), making it the most common birth defect and the number one cause of infant deaths. An additional 160,000 babies may die in the womb due to heart defects.
Today, about 109 babies will be born with heart defects in the United States.. Today, at least 10 mothers will know the pain of losing that baby. Today, some of these mothers will be from our neighborhoods!
Today, too many toddlers and school-aged children will be found to have an undiagnosed CHD at a routine doctors visit or an unrelated emergency.
Today, according to statistics, there is a significant chance that 1 teenaged/young adult athlete will die during a sporting event from an undiagnosed CHD.
Today, we need to make a difference and raise Awareness, promote Research and provide Support and Education.
Congenital Heart Defects
More than 40,000 infants (one out of every 100 to 120) are born with heart defects each year in the United States. The defect may be so slight that the baby appears healthy for many years after birth, or so severe that its life is in immediate danger.
Heart defects are among the most common birth defects, and are the leading cause of birth defect-related deaths. However, advances in diagnosis and surgical treatment over the past 40 years have led to dramatic increases in survival for children with serious heart defects
What is a congenital heart defect?
A condition is called congenital when it is present at birth. Heart defects originate in the early part of pregnancy when the heart is forming. Congenital heart defects can affect any of the different parts or functions of the heart.
