The History Of Kickin Music

About Me

MySpace LayoutsLook way back through the mists of dance music history, all the way back to 1990 and you'll find the birth of Kickin Records. The label burst out of the expanding rave scene finding success from its very first releases. Early hits for the label included the seminal Scientist tracks 'The Bee' and 'The Exorcist', Kick Squad's' 'Soundclash' and an wealth of early Shut Up & Dance tracks. Moving forward the label unearthed the chart-bothering Messiah outfit and signed early tracks from Grant Nelson, then working under the Wishdokta name.As the early rave scene mutated the label diversified to techno, with the successful 'Techno Nations' series providing an essential snapshot of the best in British, European and American electronic dance music. Around this time Kickin also released a series and singles and an album from Plantastik, an early pseudonym of Matthew 'Bushwacka' Benjamin alongside material from DJ Hell and Peace Division that still sounds fresh today. In the late 1990's Kickin moved into slightly more commercial territory releasing such heavy-hitters as Jonah's 'Sssst', Aaron Carl's Dance Naked, Blaze's My Beat and 'Supernatural' by King Britt under his Firefly alias. Hitting the charts on numerous occasions this was a 2nd golden period for Kickin.Kickin took a break around 2002 as the label's sexier younger sibling Slip 'n' Slide continued to excel. The label returned in the middle of 2005 with a run of commercial singles aiming to get the label back in the charts. Sadly the dance music landscape had changed and it was time for a rethink. From Spring 2006 the label began to source new material from a new wave of producers who were making waves around Europe.Fast forward to winter 2006 and things are in place to relaunch, with the label taking an 'accessible underground' view to its A&R work. Leading the charge is new mixes of DJ Hell's classic release. The mixes sum up the labels new philosophy covering electro house and minimal techno courtesy of Brique Rouge main man David Duriez, the Kompakt approved Perc and white-hot new London duo Pramface. Following that is an EP from Jon Virtue, a hot new Glasgow talent that has already won Radio 1 support, and the Tigerskin mixed 'Fruitmachine' by Germany's Voltaxx & Lissat. Kickin also has a new logo and artwork in the pipeline that reflects its change in music policy and it's growing underground support. On the album front Kickin is proud to have hooked up with Issst, London's most talked about club night to launch the first 'This Is Isst' compilation and more titles are planned throughout 2007.
