Fides Quaerens Intellectum ~ Faith seeking understanding

About Me

Life is complicated! A lot of people don't ever think about why, they are too occupied with how. I have always been disinterested in the how. It always seemed to just happened regardless of 'how' I intended it to. I spend a lot of time trying to understand the why. It's like life is this big test and there is just so much revision to do!
So, I am complicated, in case you hadn't worked it out. I'm earnest too, there are no shallow places in me, only deep ones and I know that can be hard for some people to cope with.
I am in love with my wife who I met in 1989 and married in 1995. She is great in every way and an real inspiration to me as well as a support and a guide. It is extraordinary to be part of a relationship that matures with age. I love her more every year that passes, our souls seem to inter-twine, our roots grow more entangled and our marriage grows stronger and stronger.
I am a father of four children, three boys and a girl. I take that responsibility very seriously, I'm not the best father ever in the world, I do not labour under any illusions, but I do take the responsibility of bringing up little souls very seriously.
Family life fascinates me. I have investigated many ideas and tried on quite a number of lifestyles, yet, ultimately, people look at my Marriage in awe and always ask me how we have done it. I formed the opinion long ago now that the Church had the answers as far as relationships were concerned. What the Catholic Church teaches about people intereacting with people is so incredibly practically effective. It works on every level. It's not easy-- some things about it are incredibly tough, you might be shaking your head reading this and thinking how wrong I am but, look around you: Lou and I are living proof to me that Catholic Marriage is the most incredible institution; the best way to go about life and the most rewarding.
I'm a reader. The older I get, the more reading I want to do. I have a great love of books and of words, poetry and prose. I have a huge library and am constantly adding to it!
I have an affinity for India and for the Middle East. I don't know why, but all things Indian sit comfortably with me. I am drawn to the people, the colours, the sites, the music of the sub-continent. I have never been, but hope very much to go one day!
I have never been to the Middle East either, but again I love the people, the music and the culture (and the food!!). I have many Muslim friends and have great respect for that great faith. I also have many concerns and fears lately and I wonder where things will end!
I also love America. I have been, but want to explore more- Colorado, Utah, Oregon. I love the iconography of the cow boy and the Native American tradition, living as one with the planes, in symbiosis with your environment. America is archetypal for my generation I think. A symbol of truth, freedom and justice. Today that image is often challenged and contested, there are some ideas around that I struggle with. I am no lover of guns for example. But America remains a wonderful place full of friends and lofty ideals.
I find Mormonism fascinating as well- it seems quintessentially American. The few Mormon friends I have made are truly special people and I would love to meet more!
It is true, I own and run four companies, but it's not really what I want to do and it's not really who I am. It just happened. I am searching for a vocation. I think my vocation lies with people and my family and stuff like that. I love my work in Parish Catechesis and in the Church. I spent a lot of time working with the sick and handicapped in Lourdes, France before my family came along and found it immensely rewarding. Maybe I'll end up doing something like that?
I am desperate to know God, I feel his call to me in the depths of my soul-- the tool I use to find him is Catholicism- but, although I am a proud and faithful Catholic it is probably different to what you know, whether you're Catholic or not.
Saint Michael the Archangel,
Defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host - by the Divine Power of God - cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits, who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.
Amen

O Mary, bright dawn of the new world, Mother of the living, to you do we entrust the cause of life: Look down, O Mother, upon the vast numbers of babies to be born, of the poor whose lives are made difficult, of men and women who are victims of brutal violence,of the elderly and the sick killed by indifference or out of misguided mercy. Grant that all who believe in your Son may proclaim the Gospel of life with honesty and love to the people of our time. Obtain for them the grace to accept that Gospel as a gift ever new, the joy of celebrating it with gratitude throughout their lives and the courage to bear witness to it resolutely, in order to build, together with all people of good will, the civilization of truth and love, to the praise and glory of God, the Creator and lover of life.
Amen.
~ Pope John Paul II

My Interests

Ultimately, my Wife and Family have to come first on this list! But also I would say primarily reading (I read an awful lot!) and writing (especially on www.dragonslist.com)but I am studying for a degree and people say I have a way with words- so- not hiding my light under a bush or anything!

I train Wing Chun Kung Fu and other martial arts. I've been training Wing Chun under the renowned Master Teacher James Sinclair for seven years now- he's pretty good, trust me! I have trained Judo, Go-ju Kai Karate, bit of Ju-jitsu, bit of grappling and BJJ, bit of weapons, my fav is the nunchukka- and I can chuck it about a bit. I have done a bit of Taijichaun, but wasn't crazy about it to be honest. I think it might have been the teacher. I would love to do more internals, Bagua seems particularly interesting!

I'm also into philosophy and all kinds of spirituality and theology, Church History,(for example the facts behind The Crusades, the Inquisitions, The Avignon Captivity of the Papacy, The Reformation and Enlightenment, that sort of thing).

I play squash, in the summer I go Scuba Diving, in the winter I go Skiing, I am part fish and love to go Swimming, I'm a keen Cyclist, I love Walking, and when I can Kayaking.
You scored as Roman Catholic. You are Roman Catholic. Church tradition and ecclesial authority are hugely important, and the most important part of worship for you is mass. As the Mother of God, Mary is important in your theology, and as the communion of saints includes the living and the dead, you can also ask the saints to intercede for you.

Phew! That's a relief! :) I do worry!

I'd like to meet:

The world!!I'm pretty open really! I'm quite well travelled and quite open minded- (though I have a mindset, if you know what I mean). I have found that I really love people so if you do too, why not stop and say hello!
I would like to meet anyone who reads what I've posted here and wants to chat. Anyone who has some wisdom to empart or some knowledge to share.
Anyone with a keen turn of phrase or a beautiful way of elucidating their dreams!
Anyone who wants to ask questions about Catholicism- or about my journey of faith will be welcomed with open arms.
Anyone who is into Martial Arts of any kind and wants to talk about it, ask for advice about training or styles or schools- but be warned- I've touched hands with people all over the world and if I'm in your neck of the woods I'm likely to ask to hook up and roll- so no keyboard warriors please!!!

Anyone with peace in their heart and love to share!!

Music:

I have extremely eclectic tastes encompassing everything from Simon & Garfunkel to Pink Floyd, Gorecki to Billy Joel, The Cult to Greig. I like Dire Straits, James Blunt, Sade, The Jam and anything by Paul Weller, Madness, DeDannan, Abba- was always a big Abba fan- of more of the darker stuff like "The Visitors" (did you know Abba had a dark side??) I love Christy Moore although I think sometimes his politics are a bit half cocked, The Cure, Colm O'Donnel and The Fureys- especially The Spanish Cloak album.

Public Enemy & De La Soul are firm favourites!

I'm very fond of Rachmaninov. At the moment I'm listening a lot to Suzzane Vega.

I think Nitin Sawhney is awesome and I would have to say is my favourite artist at the moment! Sunscreem are a local band that I have always followed although they're not really mainstream. Some of their stuff is pretty iconic for me and very evocative of certain times in my life. They continue to produce excellent music I very much enjoy! Peter Gabriel's album So is also an all time favorite.

Movies:

Anything martial arts or with monsters in :pI love Star Wars and the Alien series, also stuff like the Shawshank Redemption, True Grit, The Matrix, stuff like that!

Television:

Not a big TV fan really. I like news programs and documentaries. Question Time, University Challenge, Top Gear. I don't watch soaps or serials. Life is just too short!
Got into the Avatar cartoon recently! Don't miss an episode!

Books:

Tons and tons. In fact I'd say authors would be more appropriate heading than books!

Right now I'm reading "What is Lonergan up to in Insight- A Primer" By Terry Tekkipe

"For the Love of Wisdom" By Chris John-Terry

One of the very finest books I have read recently is "Bad Mad or God" By John Redford. It's not avaliable on Amazon.com, but is on Amazon.co.uk or here- http://www.maryvale.ac.uk/bookshop.htm the Maryvale Institute's bookshop, in it Fr. John gives a thorough overview of the issues connected with the historical Jesus debate, from a Catholic viewpoint. Fr John takes all scholarship very seriously and values the contributions from all sources, but argues very persuasively for the divinity of Christ from the evidence of St John's Gospel. It is tightly argued, clearly stated and a compelling read for anyone familiar with the debate. Highly Recommended.
