About Our Name
"Spirit Dog" is actually an old Native American name for horses. The horse was first brought to the Americas by the Spanish in 1540, when they traveled north from Mexico in search of fabled cities of gold. Some of the horses escaped, and flourished on the plains. Until they became more common, horses were a strange sight to Native Americans, in fact they were frightened by them. To the Native Americans, the horse looked like an enormous dog. So, the horse was called "Spirit Dog" or "Medicine Dog" because the horse was much larger, stronger and faster than real dogs.
