Blackened Earth was formed in 1996. After throwing together a 3-song demo tape and submitting it to the Jackson County Battle of the Bands, three weeks after forming, Blackened Earth had their first gig. In the summer of 1996 Blackened Earth quickly gained the attention of the local music community by winning the Jackson County Battle of the Bands only five weeks after forming. After a brief set of 6 gigs, the original vocalist quit. This would normally devastate a newly formed band. But not Blackened Earth. The search for a new vocalist brought them in contact with Brian Osborn. Osborn's addition set this band apart from almost all other local bands because this guy can SING! An experienced stage and theatre performer, Brian has the goods and boy can he deliver! The following year saw Blackened Earth playing many, many shows, opening for national acts Sevendust and King Diamond as well as building up a committed fan base. In 1997 Blackened Earth were considered one of the Top 50 unsigned bands in America by Discmakers, Inc.
The next couple of years saw Blackened Earth evenly committed to live gigs and studio time. Between November 1999 and January 2000, Blackened Earth played showcases at the Nashville Indie Week and Philadelphia Music Conferences. Blackened Earth rocked the house on both occasions!! Continuing to build on their reputation as one of the best live bands around, Blackened Earth played all over the Mid West and in August, 2001 they were judged the winners of the Q106fm "Homegrown" Contest. Chosen as the best from a field of over 300 Michigan bands, this was a great honor and Blackened Earth garnered 'heavy rotation' on Q106 for their powerhouse song "So Dark". Blackened Earth continued gigging at a furious pace until early 2002, but ultimately found themselves in search of a bassist and drummer. The Earth fell silent......and the sky went Black.....
Bassist Ray Smetana and drummer Shane Lantrip were selected to fill out the lineup. On a sunny and beautiful Michigan summer day, 10,000 watts of heavy metal thunder came down on the Ingham County Fairgrounds and Blackened Earth cemented their reputation as a true musical force to be reckoned with by placing 1st out of over 500 bands at the 2003 Ingham County Battle of the Bands.
In 2006, Blackened Earth has written their most exciting and relevant material yet. Blackened Earth has overcome many obstacles. They have entertained thousands. They continue to hone the craft of heavy music and entertainment. Blackened Earth is now looking for a recording/distribution deal and playing live in and around Michigan.
