DJ Kid - J is a Leicester based DJ whose roots to the urban music scene go back to the 90s! He started as a B Boy dancer both solo & with crew (Up Town Posse). He bought a set of 1210s decks for everyone in his crew to gain from.
It is at this time when Kid J self taught himself how to mix and blend. This is when he first started buying tunes. He initially started Djing for fun and pleasure because the music was in his heart. He remembers his first radio DJ work on a pirate station called Kickin Fm back in the day during the new Jack swing era.
After obtaining a large extensive record selection, ultimate disaster struck every djs worst nightmare happened. His whole record collection, 1210s turntables and all his equipment was stolen from his crib. In affect it ended his career before it even really started. Kid J said, " I was totally devastated I was walking around in a daze for weeks proper wounded saying to myself why me, why did they not at least leave the Vinyl".
Kid J gave up his love and pursued a career as a technical engineer. Kid J was absent from the clubbing and DJ scene for about 7 years. Deep down he knew that something was missing from his life and the normal 9 to 5 job just was not cutting it.
Then in Aug. 2001 he got a call from his friend Wayne aka 'DJ Wayne Wreckz' to play an old school set @ club 361, as it is now called and he borrowed some tunes and dropped classics in the club. After that he got the bug again bought some decks and started splashing out around £200 per week @ 2 Funky records to catch up on tunes and try to replace what he had lost.
He and Wayne decided that they would take leicester by storm and Kid J joined Waynes crew "The After Dark Crew" To get here name known and to get his first professional job as DJ's they did what most people do and handed out mix tapes to bars, clubs & promoters in his home town. Here hard work and determination paid off and in late 2001 "The After Dark Crew's" professional djing career began.
The deadly Duo soon took Leicester by storm and locked down various clubs and bars but due to the politics in the game and all the other Bul*** in the game "The After Dark Crew" Split and Wreckz & Kid J went there seperate ways but continued to keep Leicester on Lockdown.
Kid J's style is strictly urban! Mainly RnB and hip-hop, bashment and a slight taste of garage. In 2003 Kid J put pen to paper and signed to Independent record label, Daydream records based in London. He has co-hosted concerts that some people will only ever dream of hosting. Theres Sean Pauls Edinburgh & Nottingham concert plus the after party for the concerts. He's mingled and chilled with all the stars including Beyonce, Missy Elliot, Pharrell Williams, Outkast, Black Eyed Peas, Sean Paul, Mr Vegas, Justin Timberlake, to name a few!
If hes not showing off his talents on the decks you can guarantee he has got his fingers in the pie elsewhere. When Ludacris entertained at the Brixton Academy 2004 Kid J was there behind the scenes guarding Ludacris and helped organising the event.
Hes recently became the manager of the UKs leading urban music store 2 Funky (link). He was also judged the 2004 DMC finals heats in Leicester & if that isnt enough he also runs an urban radio station - Diamond 102.5 fm. & was Tour DJ for Wayne Williams (previous member of Another level, Daydream Records). At present Kid-J teaches Djing skills to colleges and Youth centers around the UK with the 2 Funky DJ workshop programme. He told me he started in the game because of his love for music and also to make money and judging by his past, present and future involvement in the urban scene he is doing just that in no time!
