“28 Weeks Laterâ€
This sequel flexes a virtual compilation of camera techniques that sets it levels higher above the usual fare of shoddy recycled horror. Most importantly it's very scary. It will be shocking to some if they haven't already witnessed the 'eye plugging' scene from the original! In many respects this is a new compliment to the genre. Killer.

“Sunshineâ€
Another cool film from director Danny Boyle (28 Days Later, Trainspotting) and an absolute must see for any Sci Fi fan (Hollywood’s less favoured genre). If you were to take Event Horizon and Solaris and combine them with a few obscure 2001 and Alien references you pretty much end up with a story like this. A grand scale space thriller filled with wonder, air-tight tension and jaw dropping special effects that demands a big screen viewing.
****
“Hot Fuzzâ€
Director Edgar Wright generates yet another hit comedy thriller with elements of The Wicker Man, Scream and even some references to actioner flicks like Point Break and Bad Boys II (‘…you haven’t seen Bad Boys II!? Awwwh!’). Buddy Cop movies are an over familiar territory but the films ultimate charm will differentiate your comparisons to any of those.

“Casino Royaleâ€
It’s good to see Bond as a little more of a vindictive hard-case killer, with some authority ‘issues’ and who couldn’t care less about how his Martini is served. Surely, a spy such as Bond must have dark side. In this film that soul is revealed. If you like action movies too this film is as fresh as they get.

“Grudge 2â€
…Is a slightly better movie than the previous remake and still helms the original ‘Ju-On’ Director, offering closure behind the story of the cursed House. The family of Ghosts are explained in more detail too. Not really that dissimilar though to the Ring story, meaning little in the way of surprises. There are some scares so it’s still true to the original form of being a creepy, dark, grim and haunting. Pretty much for the die hard fans in that respect.

"Pan's Labrynth (El Laberinto del fauno)"
Latino Director Guillermo Del Toro, whose best films include The Devils Backbone, Cronos and Mimic, received Oscar attention for this fantasy based supernatural Horror.
It comes on like an R rated version of Alice in Wonderland with an almost obsessive concentration on violence and cruelty... But at the same time the film looks beautiful and is dark and freaky at times. I thought that it could have done a lot more with the fantasy element instead of the predominantly fascist Spain 1944 setting.

"The Departed"
Directed by Martin Scorsese
With all the Oscar attention I won't be raving on and on about how good this is, every positive review out there will tell you that. I'd rather draw attention to Andrew Lau and Siu Fai Mak's original as being one of Japans greatest films!
Infernal Affairs is now a trilogy and the sequel is actually the prequel to the first. The 3rd being the actual sequel to 1 (??). Anyway try the original out -- superb.

"The Descent"
The 2nd Horror film from Neil Marshall who first made the low-budge Werewolf actioner Dog Soldiers and with that as an all male cast, it’s a nice touch to witness an all-female cast in this one. Not only far superior to that but one of the best made Horror films of the 21st century. The claustaphobia intensified with meticulous suspense really puts the choke hold on the viewer nearly 15 minutes into the film. The real genius behind its scariness is keeping the Monsters out of the picture for the whole first half of the film. Much the way Alien succeeded in mounting the fear. You know something is down there with them, and you just know the bodies are gonna rack up, so brace for impact for the Descent will knock you out.

"Pulse"
Cripes! Asian Horror is some creepy shit. The Ring, Grudge, Dark Water, The Eye and A Tale of Two Sisters are my favourites. You could look at this as being a heady mix of all of them, kinda like J-Horror rocket fuel! Pulse is about a ghost-virus that spreads throughout computers. It spreads similarly to the common flu and pretty soon almost everyone’s got it! Enter Apocalyptic type scenario. The Paranormal reference behind Pulse is actually called Instrumental TransCommunication which is a type of EVP...if you can remember the 'they're here' scene from Poltergeist then you get the picture! I watched the Japanese one first and then the American remake soon after. Both are good on their own but the J-Horror version is essentially scarier due to its nightmarishly grim tone.

"Stranger Than Fiction"
Good to see Will Ferrell in a role like this. It isn't quite as good as ‘…Spotless Mind’ yet is intelligent enough not to try and be. A good supporting cast includes Dustin Hoffman, Maggie Gyllanhaal and Emma Thompson. If you remember the Aqualung scene in Anchorman there's another similar one in this, this time with an acoustic guitar.

"Ali"
This is the true story of Cassius Clay, or his Islam name we all know as Mohammed Ali. Will Smith is the real business in this. I admit he can be in some cheesy films but you can def see why he was nominated for an Academy Award for his role here. Utterly convincing! Mann films that I can also recommend include Manhunter (later remade again as Red Dragon and made before Silence of the Lambs), Heat and Collateral. Unfortunately, I can't really say the same for his movie version of Miami Vice. But anyhow, if you wanna know more about Ali then this (and the doco When We Were Kings) is a pretty amazing insight into the legend that was...

"Apocalypto"
It's a good film, and becomes great after about 10 minutes where Apocalypto moves at such a frenetic pace you'll find yourself gasping for air!
Some scenes are over familiar, such as the Waterfall jump, but the originality is more about how much more realistic these scenes are made. Some shots are quite disturbing including decapitated heads rolling down the Aztecan style structures during the Mayan sacrifices.
Expecting a History lesson?
Never rely on Hollywood for that!
Essentially this is an Action film that just happens to be about a civilazation that we know hardly anything about.
Think Last of the Mohicans meets Apocalypse Now and you're pretty much there.
I enjoyed practically every minute of the film. The direction is raw and gritty, the acting is all in check and even the score was good...

"United 93"
Paul Greengrass who made spy cool again with The Bourne Identity directs the story of United 93. This is of course the mainstream media version (CNN co-wrote the screenplay with the CIA or something). It's complete propaganda in this sense, and even in the Hollywood telling of the story, there are plot holes that are obvious. On the other hand UA93 is incredibly air tight with its delivery (that is considering its 2 hour running time). One of the most well made thrillers in the last ten years. Way better than I expected it to be. I have to recommend you see it.

"The Host"
A good creature feature is hard to find and if you are a fan of this kind of movie, you'll receive just that. To date this is the highest grossing South Korean film of all time and was made with a budget of 12 Million (thanks Wikipedia!).
Directed by Bong Joon-ho and starring Park Gang-Du who recently impressed me in 'The Quiet Family' (where he acts alongside Oldboy's Choi Min-sik).
The monster is bizarre yet somehow plausible enough to be a realistic one. Perhaps due to the film being so damn good at placing science fiction horror with a believable state of emergency back-drop.
The makers of The Host aren't exactly subtle in their intentions for this to be a cult hit, so from opening frame you know what you're getting. Worked for me!
****
"The Eye 2"
Directed by The Pang Brothers. This is a great sequel set in both Thailand and China about a woman who attempts to commit suicide and ends up bringing back a whole bunch of nasty Ghosts to the land of the living! Some tightly executed camera work, lots of frights, squirmish bits and some original special effects. But strictly for Asian-horror fans of films like The Grudge, Dark Water and Tale Of Two Sisters.

"An Inconvenient Truth"
Al Gore really does put the current state of our world in to perspective with this. Thankfully we are spared close to zero political rant and offered plenty of hard science fact. Therefore plenty inspirational and thought provoking. Comparative to Loose Change version 2 on Google Video, the Corporation and the Weather Underground (on DVD) as far as impact goes.

"Lantana"
Amazing Australian film. Hard-hitting and emotionally resonant.
This is what the movie CRASH tried to be... that whole seemingly un-related character formation with subsequent zero degrees of separation thing. Yes and of course everything connects at the end. Bravo to Lantana for pulling it off in a far more plausible and less mellow dramatic fashion! I thoroughly recommend this. Also, a good introduction to Australian cinema (if you aren't all too familiar with it).
****
"Millennium Actress"
by Satoshi Kon (Anime director of Perfect Blue & Tokyo Godfathers). Well paced story laced with beautifully rendered animation. Likened to the plot structures explored in the movie 2046.

"Paris, Texas"
(By Wim Wenders) is a mid-80's masterpiece. This had been my 3rd viewing to affirm my belief in this. A tragic love story with a European slash American western twist.

...So yeah, I've seen perhaps a trillion other films...I'd love to write about all of them but not in this lifetime! By the way Transformers is crap. Don't bother!
"Lost"
I resisted for years and recently (Mid 2006) tried out the first & second season. Damn. I am so addicted. The conclusion and subsequent cliffhanger of Season 2 is ridiculously good, like the FBI shutting down the X-Files all over again!
Progress: Seasons 1 to 3.
"Family Guy"
"Damn you vile woman!" This is my favourite comedy on Television, DVD, You Tube or anywhere else available. Honorable mention: "Stewie: The Untold Story" Movie.
Progress: Seasons 1 to 5.
"The Sopranos"
Initially I was 'too gangstered out' with Italian cinema. But there's a definite lack of that these days so I love it for being a true-to-form mobster epic.
Progress: Seasons 1 to 6 (up to Kaisha).
"The Office"
The same creators as the Extras. Effing funny shit. Comedian, Actor, Musician and of course Paper Filing Manager Ricky Gervais presents us as the epitome of a character you will love to hate.
Progress: Seasons 1 to 2 (+ Xmas Specials).
"The Mighty Boosh"
I have been obsessed with this show; it’s entirely fresh and unique. Colourful, quirky and hysterical. Good use of studio sets, costume and packed with laughs. I don’t watch TV so I’m not sure if it’s even screened here in New Zealand but if you ever find it on DVD somewhere, Grab it, don’t think twice – it’s brilliant!
Progress: Seasons 1 to 2.
