PETER CHAN...MORE THAN JUST MUSICCall him a musical maverick, a left fielder, or a visionary, but what ever you call Peter Chan make sure you add that he's a true representative of Hip Hop music. The Brooklyn born EMCEE speaks with unbending confidence and wisdom about his experience in the music industry.
Peter Chan, who got his name for his love for karate flicks as a teen was one third of the group Science of Sound. His group was groomed and mentored by Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest and was supposed to be a new addition to the socially conscious/fun side of Hip Hop, however changes in upper management at Atlantic records proved detrimental to the group's survival. On top of that the other members of his group where hit with federal charges, one of them facing a 24-year sentence. €œBeing signed to a major label and being shelved is a painful thing but that's the way the game goes, as fucked up as it seems the rules are wicked, it almost killed me but in return it made me a stronger and better artist€?
In 2004 he formed Nois-E Art Records with his cousins and business partners and in 2005 a film division shooting co-directing and scripting his own music videos. €œWhen people hear I shoot my own video's their like cool put it on and after they see my product their like damn! You really shoot videos! I knew in order to stand out from the camcorder video's floating around on the independent circuit I hade to do something to separate myself from the pact so I did my home work studied, hired the right people and executed a quality product."
When asked what best describes his musical style he says, €œMy music is street yet intellectually fueled, it's creatively textured yet relatable to all. Right now in New York everybody's on the thug, gangster thing their focusing on being the next Jay-Z or Biggie or Pac and with me it's about being yourself and making music that matters. What I do is about artistry and musicianship, being creative like a Kanye West or The Roots. Right now there are no new artists from New York that represent what I represent, just the music. I was heavily influenced by acts like OutKast, Mos Def, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Common, or any groups or artist who represented anything but the norm. There's something refreshing about my music and I love it.€?
Currently he has released his first Single "Suga Honey" and has independently sold over 3,000 copies. He has also negotiated an in store performance with a major music chain and has a deal on the table to distribute his music and video in Europe. As far as people trying to get in the game he says, €œIts 2006 Peter Chan is on some 2008 shit! Everybody is trying to see were the music industry is and how to get in I'm focused on were the industry will be in years to come. The game is so monkey see monkey do right now it's so over saturated and cliché if you do something you gotta put a twist on it to make the old ideas fresh again.
Peter Chan will continue to make the quality music, to shoot my own videos and to grow as an artist and a businessman. We just signed a Rock group from Virginia, a Country singer form South Carolina and a Rapper names Meals from V. A. Our music range is sick and my team is all about good music." He then smiles and says, €œI like the way the musical aspects of my life has turned out.
