About Me
Gas batteria.
Nonostante i nuovi stimoli, il secondo demo (2003), “Space Jurney To The Rocky Planet†risente ancora di sonorità punk e “in levareâ€.
A P H Y---Tip-Tap-Toe and a bottle of scotch, time to tell you guys our mighty if not stoop-stupendous story… In pure, fine Italian style, let’s exaggerate things a little bit for a better rock’n’roll biography, alright? Right!
DryTap was born in Torino, first capital of Italia as an independent nation, around the year 2000. We were 4 fifteen-year-olds in high school, we were barely discovering beer and what our wee-wee was for, and since we all liked rock music we decided to start playing in a band…
But let’s introduce our wannabe heroes: playing guitar Karto, the bizarre half Italian-half Canadian result of an 80’s experiment mixing a human with a lizard and a gum face; playing bass Monte, an eccentric moose that was secretly sent to Italia by the CIA in a feeble attempt to fight communism (keep in mind it was the 1980’s) but acquired a gorilla-like attitude and posture somewhere along the way; playing drums Nicky and singing loud and proud Ciccio.
Our first gig was disastrous, after 3 songs the mixer-guy came up to us and said “Err…sorry guys…it’s getting kinda late, I have to cut the power…Let’s call it a night shall we?â€. We thought the it’s-getting-kinda-late bullshit was actually true. We had received our baptism of fire, we had hopped on the express train to stardom and glory!
The second gig was actually pretty good, with people moving and jumping, and so we went on playing in a gig here and there, for a year or so, and our first not-cover song “Parodia†was born. Italian-punk sounding, cuz punk was what we were playing in our walkmans at the time. After another year or so we weren’t doing anything new, so the band split up, and Monte & Karto went searching for a new drummer to heal the wounds of the crippled band…
Meanwhile, a few Paesana-sessions (playing guitar and singing in Monte’s place in the country, with the aid of various alchemistic compounds you can easily find in wine and hemp) had produced some new ideas and songs ready to inflict on potential audiences. The new drummer materialized in the form of Zanu, a heck of a drum-slammer with a heck of a groove. Things were going great, so we decided to take THE step… In January 2002 we went to Spazio 211 to record a demo cd, recorded by Robertone “Bob Biker†Tonetti, who did a great job and also enriched our hapless musical souls with his experience and knowledge. The Demo cd had (well…still has) 7 tracks, punk-skaish sounding.
So Drytap went on giggin’, with a Demo cd to sell or simply give away, and sounds and groove getting better.
But things started going the wrong way again, and DryTap split yet again, leaving Monte & Karto looking for another drum-drummer with a steam-engine groove to keep the music rolling and kicking.
How was Ga found, you wonder? Mmmm…
Monte & Karto found Ga in a mental institution, and since he looks like what you get trying to blend a cute-cutie pussy cat with a cut-throat Albanian crack dealer, and since he was having the time of his life savagely banging a gong with a steel rod and copiously drooling and snarling, we knew we had found SuperDrums. When asked “Buddie… what IS your problem?â€, Ga, still twitching, answered “Gnff… Drumming is my BeezNeez!â€.
He actually did have a modern life, he was (and still is) playing with a band called FTM, and had a cellar to rehearse in.
So Karto & Monte & Ga, current Drytap incarnation, started playing together in Ga’s cellar and changing style toward rock’n’roll.
With new songs and sounds on the way, we went back to Bob Biker to record our second demo, “Space Journey to the Rocky Planetâ€, 10 songs sounding good but still a little green since our sound had yet to evolve and ripen.
So we kept on playing gigs in and around Torino, and in April 2003 flew up to Essen in Germany for a kick-ass gig.
During the next year or two, having our own rehearsal room (for the joy and happiness of Ga’s neighbors) we took to decisive step of buying our own gear: Karto bought a Laney tube amp and his sexy 1973 Fender Mustang, Monte bought a Fender Precision bass and his shrieking 1972 Fender Bassman tube amp… Hooray for tubes and the kick-and-punch-and-twang they give.
While developing and consolidating their current sound, blending rock’n’roll with punk, blues and old-school country and rocksteady, Drytap kept on giggin’ around, in places like Imbarchino (perfect for Drytap setup), Murazzi, Spazio 211 and other pubs & clubs around Torino, indoor during winter, outdoor during summer.
In May 2004 city of Torino sent us for an alcoholic trip to Czech Republic, where we were treated like stars (hotel, food and beer paid for), and experienced morning gigs (never again...please…).
A year later Karto went to Vancouver for a few months, and after that it took a while to get back to playing compact and kicking, but new songs were coming out and the existing ones were changing… Drytap needed to record the stuff, it had been years since the last cd and the sound had evolved and gone a long way…
Fellow jam-sessioner Chris, Brit to the bone (we love you man), got us a gig in London, so off we went to England for a few days.
Well… like every fairytale there comes a happy ending, or at least a surprise… I can only say that in June DryTap recorded 10 thrashing and kicking songs at Elfo Studio......................................................
