About Me

"The Australian songbird is a rare treat - a solo female vocalist who can sing beautifully, write moving songs, play guitar wonderfully well and exude warmth for the audience all at the same time." - Teresa Mallam, Free Press Canada. With her unique fusion of acoustic folk blues, independent Australian singer-songwriter and wandering troubadour Anita George has been captivating audiences with her rich voice, percussive guitar playing and poetic sensibilities. The lead track from her second release ‘The River’ has gained national airplay on Triple J and community radio in Australia and international airplay on ‘Talksport’, the UK’s largest commercial radio station. Having been selected to showcase at the NXNE festival in Toronto, Canada, George is quickly emerging as ‘one to watch’ on the international music scene.Growing up in her artistically diverse hometown on Hobart, Tasmania, George honed her craft over several years of touring festivals and venues across the country including Falls Festival, Australian Music Week, the Melbourne Fringe Festival, Backdrop Festival (Qld), Manchester Lane, the Cornish Arms (Vic), Tongue and Groove (Qld), Das Kapital (ACT), the Republic Bar (Tas), Nannup Music Festival (WA) and International Women’s Day Festivals (Vic, WA and Tas). She was a grand finalist in the Australian Busking Championships; PBS Fm Festival of Song and winner of the NMIT Battle of the Bands 2005 with a recording prize enabling her to record her EP The River. She has two releases behind her - the full length CD ‘Shooting for the Moon’ released in July 2005 and ‘The River’ released in October 2006 - and her song ‘Caught in the Middle’ has also been included in compilation ‘Amplified – Sounds of Tasmania’ released in November 2005.Labelled by the Sydney Morning Herald as ‘Hobart’s purveyor of sultry blues folk’, George is steadily gathering a loyal following through her constant national and international touring schedule and garnering a well deserved reputation as being in the forefront of the next crop of emerging Australian musical artists.
