I am here for Friends

About Me

I'd definitely say that I'm a total goof. I love to laugh and probably laugh at myself most of all. I have to admit that I'm also an undeniable klutz and proud of it. Granted, goofiness and klutziness is an interesting combination, but I seem to make it all right.
I graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno in May 2006, majoring in print journalism and minoring in political science.
Currently, I work two jobs: I am a copy editor full-time at the Reno Gazette-Journal and a part-time assistant at a small company here in town. Of course, that doesn't leave me with oodles of free time, but I don't mind so much. I just try to think of it as never having enough time to get bored and/or lazy. :)
When people ask me where I'm from, I usually say, "All over," because I've lived in several places in my life...San Diego, Las Vegas, New Orleans, New Jersey and a few lesser known places in between. If I could only pick one to call my hometown, however, I guess I'd say Boulder City (a little town south of Vegas) since I spent all four years of high school there. But these days, I'm finding myself more and more invested in my life here in Reno.
I have to admit that I love my close friends more than anything, and hanging out with them is always the highlight of any day for me. They would probably describe me as a strong person because I've been making it on my own without any tangible family support (emotional, financial or otherwise) for a long time now. But I'd never have made it so far without my friends always being there for me.

My Interests

I love to write--hands down.
My minor was political science, so it shouldn't be a surprise that I'm a total nerd when it comes to politics and current events.
In general, I love meeting new people, hanging out with good friends, drinking, watching movies, going to concerts, listening to extremely loud music while driving...etc and etc.

I'd like to meet:

I always love meeting new people, but I'm always thrilled to come across fun, confidant people with something to say. It's not so important to me what opinion you have just as long as you have one.
Of course, when some people do nothing more than talk out of their asses, it can get real old real quick...

I've written several articles for the Nevada Sagebrush, click here to read them . I've also reposted pretty much all of my Sagebrush reviews (on movies, etc.) on my profile at RottenTomatoes.com .
If you enjoy some of the wacky/hilarious/entertaining videos I tend to post in my bulletins, blog and elsewhere, you may want to check out my public YouTube channel .
While my taste in music tends to sway toward alternative, indie rock, I'm a fan of an eclectic assortment of bands, groups, singers, etc. Check out my LAUNCHcast Radio Station or my Project Playlist profile .
Since I finally gave in to the whole camera phone craze, I've found that having a camera with you at all times (by default) can lead to a whole new world of possibilities in regard to what off-the-wall stuff you can capture on camera. With this purpose in mind, I maintain the T-Mobile MyAlbum for the growing number of photos taken with my camera phone.
Or, you can always Facebook me .

Caren's Video Pick

Robot Chicken: Carebears
(Carebear STARE!!!!!)

I saw this clip during an episode of "Robot Chicken" a while back, and I probably almost died laughing.
Several of my friends in years past have all thought up the nickname "Carebear" for me--each one thought it up all on his or her own. I'm sure there are various reasons for this mass-assumed nickname, the biggest of which being the most obvious: My name's Caren. Caren, Carebear, Caren, Carebear...Get it? Lol. And, you know, I guess I'm a pretty caring person, too. (But don't tell anyone. I wouldn't want word to get out that I'm a softie. Lol.)
Well, I came to adopt this nickname myself. (Why fight it, right?) I even own the bedtime Care Bear stuffed animal (a gift from a former boyfriend years ago).
My point being this: When I watched this video, I was just so tickled by it that I had to repost it--especially with the hilarious New Jersey reference at the end. (Some of you might already know that I was born in New Jersey, so I'm allowed to talk a little crap about it. Lol.)
Anyway, I just felt like this clip was made for me: the sick, twisted humor so attuned to my own; the Care Bears; and New Jersey. Of course, it wasn't made for me, but that's not going to stop me from sharing it with y'all. Enjoy!

STARLIGHT (by Muse)

THIS AIN'T A SCENE, IT'S AN ARMS RACE (by Fall Out Boy)

Movies:

Don't even get me started on movies. I'm a huge film nerd. I used to review movies for the UNR campus newspaper. Now, whenever I have the time, I review DVDs for the Reno Gazette-Journal (you know, in between my moments of copy editing and the like). I love watching movies. I love talking about movies. My favorite movie genres are comedy and horror. I absolutely love Adam Sandler movies. I'm also a big Tarantino and Frank Miller fan. But if I absolutely had to list a handful of movies I like, they'd be: Grindhouse (Planet Terror and Death Proof), American Gangster, No Country For Old Men, The Departed, Sin City, Thank You For Smoking, 'V' For Vendetta, Clerks, Clerks II, Talladega Nights, The Prestige, Capote, Dogma, Halloween, Lord of War, Closer, Van Wilder, Zodiac, Mallrats, Matchpoint, Smokin' Aces, Happy Gilmore, Superbad, 300, The Shining, Alien, Team America: World Police, Scarface, The Untouchables, Mississippi Burning, The Mist, Transformers, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Saw, Saw II, Saw III, Saw IV, Black Christmas (the 1974 original--NOT the remake. Lol), Silence of the Lambs, Inside Man, Dodgeball, 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later, Lucky Number Slevin, Anchorman, The Exorcist...

Television:

If I was addicted to any TV channels, it'd probably be Comedy Central, TNT and Adult Swim, with The Daily Show, Drawn Together, South Park, Robot Chicken, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Crank Yankers, The Closer, Law & Order, NYPD Blue, The Colbert Report...
I also like Pimp My Ride, My So-Called Life, Futurama, American Chopper, The Simpsons, CSI, Mythbusters, The Family Guy...

Books:

I love anything scary, which has mostly been grisly nonfiction novels, like "In Cold Blood" and "Helter Skelter."
But I also like thought-provoking books, like "The Da Vinci Code."

Heroes:

My mom, who passed away when I was 12. She fought her breast cancer everyday with a fierceness and determination I've never forgotten, and she actually lived four months longer than the doctors expected.
Losing her so early in my life has driven me to achieve things I otherwise wouldn't have thought possible.
Countdown
Animals I have two cats: Tony Montana aka "Scarface" (and is so fat/big that he has been referred to as a "cougar" by some of my friends) and Princess Pepper (who remains virtually kitten-size no matter how old she gets but has enough ego to make up for it and judge us all unrelentlessly). They're definitely my pride and joy. But I must admit that they're wickedly weird--in other words, they simply ooze personality. Lol.
Somebody sure thinks they're sexy. Lol. (2-27-07)
