About Me
These photos by Hassan Hilliard for HH Photography October 25, 2006 Scenic Woods took the stage of BET's 106th & Park for the "Wild-Out Wednedsday" competition. She broke two records--first tie EVER on W.O.W. and the most votes the segment has ever seen! Way to go Ms. Woods!!! If you missed the show--here's a little run-down for ya! Get Your Own! | View Slideshow With all of the cookie-cutter entertainers on the music scene, its always a breath of fresh air when a true artist emerges. Destinys Child made icon-status a realistic dream for artists in Houston and with the spotlight on rap artists such as Chamillionaire, Paul Wall, Slim Thug and Lil Flip, the stage has been set for a new needle in the hay stack. That needle is Scenic Woods. If you know the live music scene in Houston, then you already know her eclectic sound and if you've ever seen her any where for any reason you cant forget her look. Scenic's electric performances at Houstons Red Cat Jazz Café, Venue, Omni Central and M-Bar among others, have quickly grown her following and have given the industry a peek into her mass appeal. Possessing the familiar personality of a Southern Belle and the sexy edge of an urban rock-star, she is relatable and still untouchable. If you are wondering what label to peg her with--R&B? Hip Hop? Neo-Soul? Rock maybe?--the truth is, she is all of that rolled nicely into one. Now, don't be confused, the sound of Scenic Woods is not chaotic or too scrambled. This is one of those rare cases when an artist really can fuse the sounds of R&B, Hip Hop, Soul, Funk and Rock and make it her own. It is this unique Southern-cooked blend of spice that makes this hometown girl one to be reckoned with.As a proud north side represented Houston native, Scenic's name became synonymous with her neighborhood, Scenic Woods (hence the name), but she felt connected to more than just her strong, deep rooted sense of home in her new name. The definition of the word "scenic" (meaning of the stage and of natural beauty) embodies her love of the arts and her artistic persona.Though Scenic Woods is recently becoming a spoken name in Houston and other major cities such as New York, L.A., Atlanta, Miami, and Dallas, she is no rookie to the music game. Her face is familiar to many as a former member of Def Squad's female trio, Tha Truth! and previous background vocalist for Faith Evans. This H-Town songbird prides collaborations with Missy Elliott, Def Squad's Erick Sermon and The RZA of Wu-Tang, is a recurrent performer at The Tampax/Pantene Total You Tour since 2003 and also co-starred in Bella, a Pan African Film Festival screened independent film. This, along with her life-long study of dance has molded her into the quadruple threat she is today.Scenic is the artist of choice to me because, she brings an element that has not been exploited in R&B from a female's standpoint. "She has a different sound thats not like anyone else out right now, but people can still relate to her music. She is the complete package," says long-time supporter Sean Arterbery.Today, Scenic is taking it to the next level. She splits her time between the recording studio and stage to produce an up-coming album themed by one of her most popular songs Damn Boy! a heavy-bass Hip Hop track with a wild sound mix of R&B, Rock and Pop, a true Scenic Woods sound.Whatever you feel when you experience Scenic Woods, the undeniable truth is that she has that something that grabs everyones attention. Don't sleep Houston! You will wake up to find yet another hometown star on the rise. These photos by Roy Cox for Roy Cox Photography
