DJ Supreme (HIJACK, UK)

Legendary UK Hip Hop DJ/Producer from SW9

About Me

DJ Supreme is an individual who, for all the right reasons, cannot be described as anything other than a legend. Making a name for himself in the early-80's within the UK Hip-Hop scene, his work as both a deejay and producer for the infamous group Hijack has left an undeniable legacy that is still being felt globally today.
In 1986 Supreme formed The Turntable Trixsters alongside DJ Undercover and MC Ron. The trio's creative direction initially focused mainly on the scratch routines of Supreme and Undercover, with MC Ron acting simply as a hype-man. But fate and destiny had other plans for the three-man unit. A chance meeting with Derek B, one of UK Hip-Hop's biggest names at the time, would lead to the crew being signed to the London-based rap label Music Of Life and the Turntable Trixsters were no more. It was now Hijack who stood ready to take the Hip-Hop world by storm.
When Hijack released their classic debut single "Style Wars" in 1988 it immediately grabed the attention of the homegrown rap audience as well as that of Hip-Hop fans across Europe. The potent blend of Kamanchi Sly's ferociously complex wordplay, coupled with Supreme and Undercover's flawlessly aggressive scratching, and some of the hardest beats ever to emerge from England helped to establish what would become known as the Britcore sound. It was Hijack who would take the sound of the UK to the next level by accomplishing something that nobody thought was possible - signing a major record deal with an American label.
Whilst touring England, famed Los Angeles rapper Ice-T heard Hijack's music while being interviewed on Tim Westwood's Capital Rap Show and was immediately captivated by the group's militant hardcore sound displayed on uncompromising cuts such as "Hold No Hostage" and "Doomsday Of Rap". Ice requested a meeting with the crew the following day and virtually signed them on the spot to his own Rhyme Syndicate imprint, a subsidiary of Warner Brothers which counted the likes of Bronx veteran Donald D, Everlast (pre-House Of Pain) and the Zulu Nation's Afrika Islam amongst its artists. The first fruits of this newly-formed transatlantic alliance would be the "Badman Is Robbin'" single released in 1989. Anticipation for the group's international debut album "The Horns Of Jericho" was immense. Released in the winter of 1991 "The Horns Of Jericho" stands as an incredible album that perfectly encapsulated the raw energy and musical vision of Hijack and their extended Hip-Hop family The HQ Squad.
In 2000 Supremes worldwide reputation was proven when he was invited to attend the United States' 2000 Scratchcon event as a guest speaker by none other than infamous soundwave twister DJ Q-Bert (who himself admits to having been influenced by the needle-thrashing of DJ Supreme after hearing Hijack's music all those years ago). Supreme has also judged ITF and DMC DJ Championships and continues to play regular club dates across Europe in places such as Spain and Holland.
Most recently Supreme completed work on a DVD project, "The Turntable Trixsters", an ambitious attempt to tell the no-holds barred Hijack story with input from such global Hip-Hop heavyweights as Ice-T, Blade, DJ Babu and original members of the HQ Squad. 2006 also sees Supreme taking up a position as presenter of a Hip-Hop show on Switzerland's newest national radio station, djradio.ch.
Some twenty years after revolutionising the UK Hip-Hop scene and shaking up the scratch game as a member of Hijack, the legend of DJ Supreme lives on, the story continues....
