All that was listed in "I'd like to meet". In addition, the Alamo Drafthouse , hunting at flea markets and thrift shops, banging on my drum kit. Promoting my company jasminemade (hint hint), making things out of vinyl. Collecting toys ( Simpsons , Star Wars , Transformers , plastic action figures), collecting "small things" like cracker jack toys, 1" buttons, smashed pieces of red tail lights, and flicker rings . Wanting to learn a foreign language, but never initiating it beyond Sesame Street spanish (abierto, cerrado!) eBay - a horrible, sick addiction. Being a rasterbator .
People who have figured out that life is too short to be unhappy. People who like doing spontaneous wacky stupid stuff, just for the heck of it. People who like: The Simpsons, Amelie, projects by Wes Anderson, sushi, fart jokes, plastic action figures, punkrock (but aren't stupid or elitist about it), making things themselves (think: Readymade, Get Crafty, Budget Living), things from at least 20 years ago (could be 80's music, 50's fashions, 40's dancing), 'zines, karaoke, bowling, zany antics. People who are nice. Not broken, and if broken - are on the way to fixing themselves. I don't have any patience or time for drama or crap. Be happy, dammit! People who sparkle/twinkle/shine, and aren't afraid to try something new. People who know what: nigiri, bubble tea, creepers, dirty girl, and trogodor are.
I heart David Bowie so much, it's almost ridiculous:In addition: All "alternative" '80s (a la 120 minutes with Dave Kendall). Older: Most on the Dischord Label, some on Kill Rock Stars, The Damned, Blondie, Adam Ant, The Jam, Buzzcocks, Boston, Journey, Go-Go's, Go-go music from WDC (ask me sometime about my sister and I being asked to " Shake it like a white girl "), Thomas Dolby, Rush, Steely Dan, Devo, Kraftwerk, Two-Tone Ska, Rocksteady older ska. Newer: Gram Rabbit, Le Tigre, Belle & Sebastian, Quasi, Bikini Kill, Boss Hogg, The Briefs, Fannypack, Fischerspooner, Interpol, Ladytron, Morrissey, Pixies, The Shins, The Sounds, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and I am finding myself simultaneously drawn to yet highly amused by all the new bands that are totally ripping off the sounds of bands from the '80's. I hate and love it. Because overall I like the sound, but then I hear riffs/tones/beats that are so obviously New Order/The Cure/Kraftwerk/Joy Division that I get mad. Like I was duped by an imposter. Kids today have no idea. God. Now I know how my Dad felt when he ranted about my generation "not getting it" about his music. GAH! I digress......
Anything Wes Anderson has made, and is in the process of making. Velvet Goldmine, Garden State, Lost in Translation, Amelie, True Stories, Dogtown and the Z Boys, School of Rock, Napoleon Dynamite, Sixteen Candles...but only for the last 5 minutes when Jake Ryan (sigh *JAKE RYAN!*) meets Samantha at the church and says "Yeah, you!" and then "If You Were Here" by the Thompson Twins pipes in. Rewind, watch, repeat. Me like stupid funny: Old School, Van Wilder, etc. Ecch. more to come....HOLY CRAP! How in heck could I have forgotten to list the Star Wars saga? Jeez.
We don't have cable tv. We are probably the last people in our demographic that doesn't. So I am limited to the common networks, and PBS. Within that realm, I love the cooking shows and woodworking shows on PBS on Saturdays. Simpsons, The Office (BBC British version), Tenacious D, Gilmore Girls (guilty pleasure...dang they talk fast!), the O.C. ...ONLY FOR SETH COHEN ! All the other jackasses are lame. Buffy, Angel, Firefly, and most else by Joss Whedon. Grrrr, arrrrgh! OK, if we had cable tv, I would list: HGTV, Style, DIY, and the Food network. I think these networks are cool because they all showcase making things, design, or before/afters that are neat. And while it was so posh to be flipping through 999 channels while at the inlaws during the holidays, I know at home we would be sparring for control between ESPN1,2,3,4,5,6,7, and the Ocho , and my stuff. And I wouldn't get done half of what I do (or what I should be doing). So, comme ci, comme ca. Oh yes, and the Lawrence Welk show. For the hair, the accordian, and the Piano Lady. And can someone PLEASE tell me why, oh why, do I get sucked into figure skating ? Rationally, I should turn my nose, but there is something about being graceful on 1/2 inch blade of metal on a sheet of ice that is admirable and for me unattainable.
Vonnegut, Crichton, Douglas Coupland, Ben Snakepit, Dan Brown, Aaron Cometbus, C.S. Lewis, Daniel Clowes.
My Mom. My sister. Martha Stewart....hell yeah I said it. FREE MARTHA!! Jack Black. You know...they should have a section called "Celebrities you wish were your friends". Under that catagory I would easily list: Jack Black, Jon Stewart, Will Ferrell, Jeneane Garafalo, David Byrne, Jack Pepin/Julia Child, and the creator(s) of Strongbad . These people are funny. Interesting. Cool. And I would be thrilled to have them over for beer and a pizza.
