The collection of eleven songs is set off with the reggae-swing of "Take It Slow" and expands further with tracks like the 50’s-tinged "Now, Lana", the raucous rockabilly of "Don’t Want To", the bouncy folk of the title track, and the pseudo-punk of "I Bore Myself". Yet, through all this genre-bending, the band retains a cohesive, retro-rock sound.
Ralph Mangeno’s impassioned vocals and quirky guitar licks, Mike Boettner’s melodic bass lines and Tim Cooper’s versatile drumming meld together with undeniable chemistry. On the stage, their personalities work in much the same way. The three life-long friends have been playing on the Detroit scene for nearly half a decade, expanding their musical limits as well as their diverse fan base.
Philo-san have also made themselves known on the Internet in a variety of ways, including an appearance on Hawaii’s most popular podcast, "The Hawaii Surf Session Report". The band’s animated music video for "Take It Slow" has been hailed as "the next ’O.K. Go on Treadmills’" and online sales of their album have been rising as a result.
The band plans to take their charismatic live performances to a regional level by touring neighboring states. They will also be continuing on their trend of innovative songwriting as a new release is expected within the next year.
