Steel Paintbrush is a Tattoo and Body Piercing Studio based in the North East of England. We run 3 average sized studios in Durham City Consett & Hexham.
Durham studio has 4 tattooists (Kev, Lee, Kim & Leanne); Kim also runs the piercing side of the studio.
Darryn & Jade are the tattooists at the Consett studio and Kev tattoos there every Tuesday & Friday.
Each one of us prides ourselves on the quality of our work, and we love to hear what you think of us and the piercing and tattoo work we do through profile and picture comments.
We also have lots of information in our blogs - aftercare, news and views of the body modification world, tutorials on different procedures as well as pictures and guides on lots of other related topics. Message us if you have a topic you'd like us to open up in our blogs for discussion.
TATTOOS
We have a wide variety of tattoo designs available; however we also do custom work. Bring us a design you would like tattooing (and, if needed, we can alter it for you). Our tattooists can handle all styles of work, from japanese to tribal, new skool to black and grey work, cover ups, re-works and everything in between! All our staff have a lot of experience and portfolios are available on request in the shops - you can also check out some of our work (which is regularly updated) on our pictures page on MySpace.
All tattoos are done with SINGLE USE NEEDLES (thrown away after 1 use), fresh inks and equipment which is fully sterilized using the most up-to-date techniques. All aftercare advice is given in our Tattoo Aftercare sheets (see blog), and we also sell Aftercare Balm in the studios, should you need it.
THINKING ABOUT YOUR 1ST TATTOO? We will answer your "stupid questions" as you always call them! There is no such thing as a stupid question! We always have someone on hand to run and get a bottle of Lucozade, should you feel a bit wobbly! Our tattooists are all EXTREMELY patient (great for nervous clients OR 1st-time tattooees). If you have a tattoo which has been started somewhere else, or you need it tidying up, all our tattooists will be able to help you, as well as discussing your options. If the tattoo is 'beyond repair' or you really don't want it anymore, cover ups are an alternative. We will discuss all possibilities with you, and we can reccomend laser removal clinics.
PAIN FREE TATTOOING NOW AVAILABLE! Both our studios offer a pain-free tattooing service upon request (please ask at time of booking). A anaesthetic cream is applied to the area to be tattooed, then covered with an airtight dressing. It takes approximately 1 hour for the anaesthetic to take affect, the skin usually turns pink and you may experience a tingling sensation. After removing the dressing, the tattooing process is much less painful (most people find they can only feel a slight pressure from the needle, no pain). The service costs £5 per tube (larger designs require more tubes – see our blog or ask in the studios for details).
Our tattoo prices are very competitive and we can give quotes on custom designs. Our custom rate is one of the cheapest around at only £50 per hour. We can usually gauge roughly how long certain pieces will take. Flash designs (on the walls/in the folders) start from £25, or bring in one of your own and get a quote.

PIERCING
As mentioned before, we also provide a piercing service. Our piercer at Durham is Kim and she has been a professional piercer since 2003 and has worked in several studios in the North-East. Kim offers a variety of piercings, from ear lobes and cartilage piercings to other more sensitive piercings such as genitals, and we now offer microdermals too. All piercings are handled in a professional and confidential manner. Any aftercare questions are covered in our aftercare leaflets (see our blogs), but if you have a query about a specific problem or piercing, don't be afraid to ask, there is no need to be embarrassed!
Do you have a piercing that isn't straight/won't heal/hurt so much it has put you off ever wanting another? Pop in and see us, and we might be able to help. If you want something re-pierced, it is not a problem. If you've had a bad experience and are a little nervous about the whole process, Kim is very patient and will explain exactly what all the equipment does and why she is using it.
Body Piercing prices start at £10 (ear lobe piercing is only £5 per lobe with gold or silver studs). Most other ear piercings are £15 (scaffold from £25), General body/facial piercing is £20, Tongue/surface/septum piercing is £30 and genital piercing is £40, Microdermals (aka Dermal Anchors) are £40.

We only use single-use needles for piercing. WE DO NOT USE GUNS as they are dangerous and can cause no end of problems. All body jewellery used is sterilized surgical grade Titanium. We cannot pierce you with a piece of jewellery you have purchased elsewhere.
We also stock a range of body jewellery in our Durham studio (including picture plugs, blackline jewellery, UV reactive items, various screw-ons, navel bars of all shapes and sizes, coloured/polished titanium, tongue picture discs, silicone flesh tunnels, retainers and 'hider' plugs plus MUCH more). We are always updating our stock, so please let us know if there is something you would like to see for sale. Photographs of our body jewellery stock can be seen in our pictures section.
We have photographs available for viewing of both our tattoo work and piercings, so go and have a look at our pictures, or call into the studios to see our portfolios.
AVAILABILITY
We take bookings for tattoo work, as well as walk in appointments ('on the day'). We will try to fit you in as soon as possible (though it can sometimes be a few days wait during busy periods). We request a minimum of £20 deposit (non-refundable) with all bookings, which is taken off the final fee of your tattoo. Sorry, but we can't take bookings through MySpace or over the phone.
OPENING TIMES
DURHAM: Monday - 12 noon - 4pm. Tuesday to Saturday - 11am - 5pm. Please ask for out-of-hours bookings (Wednesday and Thursday we will take bookings for 5-9pm - by appointment only).
CONSETT: Monday - Closed. Tuesday to Saturday - 11am - 5pm. Out-of-hours bookings available on request. Ask in the studio for details. Kev is only available at the Consett Studio on Tuesdays & Fridays. Please call the studio in advance, to avoid disappointment, if making a special trip to see us!
DIRECTIONS
DURHAM: On North road (the one with the bus station at the top), Go to Wetherspoons (The Waterhouse), Look across the road and there’s a cobbled street going up a hill, this is Neville St. We are up this street and over the road from The Fish Tank and Stanton's Fish and Chip Shop (formerly Bimbi's).
CONSETT: Underneath Peak Physique Gym on Taylor Street, round the corner from Masons pub.
