Psychobilly Zombies from Montreal...of the dead

About Me

NEW VIDEO!!! NEW VIDEO!!! MORE BRAINS DIRECTOR DAVID DONT! THE BRAINS "NO MORE". PSYCHO!!!Live @ Pat’s Pub, Vancouver, BC.Montreal. Summer of 2002. Three zombies had nothing to do but search the land of the living for some entertainment…and so THE BRAINS were born. The undead trio dug up their old and rusty instruments (vocalist/ guitarist René was once in Delta 666; bassist Johnny Montreal and drummer Franck O’ Brains were in the Ripcordz); an old 1800’s coffin bass, a nice, warm 1950’s Gretsch guitar and a long forgotten drumkit were more than enough for these fiends to bring their dynamic brand of psychobilly to the masses. In 2005, world renowned European psychobilly label Crazy Love Records came a-knockin’ and released THE BRAINS’ debut album “No Pain No Brain”. Soon after, THE BRAINS released a video fo the title track (check it out in all its raunchy, rockabilly glory here: www.myspace.com/thebrains). Nothin’ like a subtle shot of horror to perk up the undead! THE BRAINS toured relentlessly in support of “No Pain…” , gracing stages alongside RANCID, THE MATADORS, THE CREEPSHOW, BIG JOHN BATES and THE PLANET SMASHERS, criss-crossing the country and rockin’ hundreds of shows along the way. Today, THE BRAINS are among the shortlist of bands to put Canadian psychobilly on the map, along with other genre-defining acts like The Creepshow, The Matadors, The Alley Dukes, The Gutter Demons, Bloodshot Bill and The Farrell Bros. With the May 1 release of their sophomore album “HELL N’ BACK” via psychobilly/punk staple STUMBLE RECORDS, THE BRAINS have expanded on their already kick-ass mix of rockabilly and old school punk rock, even throwin’ in some “vintage” metal for good measure! Heavier, louder, and full of slick psycho hooks, “HELL N’ BACK” is guaranteed to please the psychobilly purist and punk rock fan alike. In true BRAINS fashion, the band will be hitting the road for an extensive Canadian tour in May 2007, featuring a run of shows with Lower Class Bratz. Sounds Like:The Brains - Hell N' Back (Review) Category: MusicHell N' Back Scream For Me More Brains She My Devil Blood Six Feet Bones No More Vamos Zombie Walk Zombie Riot LostCanada eh? Home to the greatest psychobilly bands of the new Millennium? The Gutter Demons live there. The Creepshow do too! The Matadors? Yes, they also inhabit that sexiest of countries...as do Montreal's finest purveyors of all things so good yet so wrong...The Brains! So, Canada, home to the greatest psychobilly bands of the new Millennium? YES! Or OUI if you will (just to keep our bilingual Canadian chums happy). The Brains are back with their second album featuring 12 new songs of which absolutely none are "fillers". You know, "yeah that song is alright, hmmmm, don't like that one...", you inevitably hit the skip button on your CD player, go back to the 2 or 3 songs you liked later! Well not so with this album. I put it on, the first song is great..the second is great, the third....great! I'm thinking to myself "surely they can't maintain this standard throughout!??". THEY DO! Excellent vocals sit astride some of the catchiest melodies and choruses you're ever likely to hear! Given the subject matter of the songs here...or at least the titles...you might think it's all death and demonic growling and standard psychobilly fare! WRONG! It's an uplifting affair! Maybe it's the harmonies? René's heartfelt vocal stylings? Perhaps it's quite simply that the band as a unit are fantastic at what they do. There's no point in going in to comparisons to elaborate on what The Brains sound like as they have a style unique on to themselves. From psychobilly to echo drenched rockabilly the boys are at the top of their league and The Brains don't rehash the aforementioned closely related musical genres with the same old predictable approach. This is different! This is talent at its finest and it shines through on EVERY song.If you missed out on The Brains first album, then not to worry. It's included here in its entirety as bonus tracks as is a scorcher of a live track. As you may have guessed by now I'm quite taken with this release and I am NOT easily impressed. There are a handful of bands that get the O'Prez Official Seal Of Approval (and you all know what impeccable taste I have) and The Brains have just got a nice hot waxy stamp on each of their Quebecan arses!
