UPDATE! new symbion remix for the band Anarchy Club... listen to it above!
for the last 10 years, symbion project has been the ongoing electronic music endeavor of k*ss*n. with most of his time spent composing and performing with his synthpop band freezepop, symbion project has long simmered in the background. in 1998 during the making of blueshift for his last band Splashdown, the first album "red" was released. it contained a mixture of styles from techno/trance to downtempo to ambient. in 2003, symbion project returned with a new full length cd entitled "Immortal Game" released on the synthpop label Ninthwave Records, with artwork by stoltze design. Not being one to be pinned down stylistically, symbion project continued to embed differing styles of electronic music into its overall aesthetic.
songs on "immortal game" have slowed dramatically into hypnotic down-tempo, reminiscent of boards of canada and dj shadow, with haunting synths and vangelis-esque ambient soundscapes. "immortal game" also features guest vocalists, like melissa of splashdown (all things remix) and leah callahan of betwixt (pawn to king 4), alongside the instrumentals.
earlier this year, symbion project released a 3rd full length album that is pretty different from what you'd expect! moved by the epic nature of vangelis (blade runner, chariots of fire) & the retro/future aesthetic of wendy carlos (clockwork orange, tron), symbion project created a "baroque minimalist electro" album that could live seamlessly in 1762, 1972, & 2162.
concerned with the non-dynamic, robotic stagnancy of current electronic music, along with the overwhelming nature of being surrounded by a studio full of synthesizers & blinking audio gear, this dynamic album was crafted using only a single 16vco analog synthesizer. very little was sequenced (except for the blazingly fast runs that bach himself couldn't do!) & almost all the parts were played in by hand. constant attention was given to exploiting & exaggerating the emotional tension of the songs through the use of dynamics, from the initial songwriting to the final mastering (analog of course).
symbion project was featured in the Sony Playstation2 videogame "Frequency" and "Amplitude" where you can interact, construct, and remix symbion project songs like "funky dope maneuver" "freQout" "synthesized" and "spastik."
symbion project has done a number of remixes over the years. in 2001, the symbion remix of "i feel loved" by depeche mode won a remix contest beating out 1100 other remixes! symbion's remix of "gabriel" by the band lamb was a finalist in their remix contest. you can listen to this remix in the song player up top. other remixes have been done for delerium and splashdown.
