Black Fatherhood: Reconnecting With Our Legacy

About Me

I was raised by my father after my mother passed away from cancer. I was ten years old at the time. Growing up I learned that my great grandfather and other ancestors raised their children after their wives died during childbirth. While growing up I also took notice to the media reports of the absence of Black men in their homes and the fact that, there was not any focus on those Black men who were raising their children and active in their communities. Utilizing my own family history, stories from hundreds of Black fathers and interviews with Educators and Historians such as Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu and Dr. Ira Berlin, I have opened a positive forum about Black fathers in a time where negative connotations of "baby-daddy" and "baby-mama" drama consistently breeds in Black communities.I also address the growing number of mentoring programs and organizations that assist men in their parenting roles and how to get the community to support these organizations as well as those who benefit from their services. Both my book and documentary give an in depth look into the hearts and souls of Black fathers as they speak on topics such as parenting, education, spirituality, the judicial system and racism.

"Even though some inevitably fell prey to the institution of slavery, there are more than enough documented stories and recorded family histories which evidence the significant and prominent role of Black fathers. Their stories and life experiences need to be celebrated and distributed within our homes and elementary educational systems with the same conviction as negative images and stories of enslaved Black men. These men were able to overcome adversities none of us could possibly entertain today, leaving us a true legacy to reconnect with."
