S ETH G RUENWALD , a composer with over 25 full-length original scores, infuses chamber music with the vocal string arrangements of a cellist, the groove of a bass player and the sentiment of a songwriter.
Seth began his cello studies at the age of eight and now plays cello, piano, bass and guitar. Since 1993 he has performed in diverse venues, with numerous bands and ensembles. His experience with sight reading and expertise in music theory have allowed him to participate in various special projects, from studio recording to improvisation for the rock operas of B ABY W ANTS C ANDY at the i.O. Theater in Chicago.
Seth holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in music composition from Columbia College Chicago, where he performed in over twenty public concerts and was featured as a composer in the 2004 Composition Notebook series performed by the I NTERNATIONAL C ONTEMPORARY E NSEMBLE (I.C.E.). During the summer of 2004, he was awarded a scholarship to attend a competitive composition program in Siena, Italy, where four of his original compositions were performed. In the fall of 2005, Seth coordinated and directed Nomadic Melodies, his final showcase at Columbia College, for which he orchestrated fifteen original compositions for a rotating ensemble of nineteen musicians.
Presently, Seth lives in Providence, Rhode Island, teaching privately and through frequent work with nonprofit community arts organizations. While continuing to expand his repertoire of musical projects with local singer/songwriters and ensembles, Seth still frequents Chicago often, to collaborate with, among others, singer/songwriter M ATTHEW S ANTOS and composer M IKE P RZYGODA . Seth prioritizes craft and community as a musician, seeking to revolutionize the competitive, image-driven culture within the music field.
