Ce Ce Winans Kingdom Kidz Project (Album with Read-a-long Book) set for 11-27-07. All original songs and script written and produced by David MullenBiographyDavid Mullen is a fifteen year veteran of the music profession; a Producer/ Songwriter/Author who characterizes himself simply as a resident of Water Valley, TN. From his farm in the shadow of the Natchez Trace Parkway, he reflects on all those “roller coaster years” he has had in the music industry. “They’ve been great years,” he admits with a wry smile, “but everything has just happened so fast that I needed to get away from it a bit. That’s why Nicole and I moved here to the farm.” Indeed things have happened quickly (and often) to this Grammy nominated, eight-time Dove Award winning artist. He began pursuing music in the mid- eighties after landing a multi-record deal with Warner Bros. Records. From there he brought his gospel infused blues-rock to every state in the U.S., Australia, Europe, Russia, Africa, Scandinavia, Japan and many more places around the world. “I think I’ve played on every college campus on the planet”, he quips. David came off the road in 1994 “to be a family man” with his wife Nicole and his newborn daughter Jasmine. Over the next six years he produced approximately twenty albums (and two more kids Max & Josiah). He’s equally prolific in his writing, and to date he has had nearly two hundred and fifty recordings made of his songs. Maybe that’s why Billboard Magazine called him “a bottomless pit of singles”. And he’s proved that all along the way as he’s picked up fifteen number-one singles writing for himself and others. It may or may not surprise you to learn that he’s worked with CC Winans, Michael Card, Kim Hill, Wes King, Michael W. Smith, Whiteheart, Phil Keaggy, Margaret Becker, BB Winans, Rachel Lampa, Salvador, Anointed, Jaci Valesques, Take 6, Aaron Neville, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Black Crows, BB King, John Lee Hooker, Whitney Houston, and many others. But it probably would surprise you to know that, along with all the G.M.A. awards he’s won as a singer, songwriter, and producer, he’s also a doctoral candidate working on his PhD (studying classical literature, theology, and history) from Knox House at Bannockburn College in Franklin, TN. “I suppose I want people to remember me for more than ‘On My Knees’ (1998 GMA Song of the Year co-written with his wife Nicole) or for writing ‘LarryBoy’ (1999 Producer of the Year Award). My obsession is communicating passion and teaching others how to communicate theirs as well. If that means writing or producing records for artists or scores for movies, doing Blues in a club, or teaching a study on ‘Faith and Art’ at the Franklin House (Dr. William L. Lane Library) then that’s what I want to be doing. I want to communicate all of that in the songs I write, the books I author, the classes I teach and to the people I walk and talk with…or ride horses with. The world is a crazy place at times. I want the excellence of my work to be my protest. See, my life is the sentence that everybody sees and reads; the creative stuff is just an exclamation point.” David was nominated for another GMA award in 2002 for his production of “Talk About It” repeating the accolade from his wife’s first album (Nicole C. Mullen) on Warner Bros./Word Records (each now approaching 400,000 in sales and best known for the #1 A/C song of 2000 “Redeemer”). He seems most proud, though, of his work on the soundtrack of the forthcoming Veggietales feature film, “Jonah” (released Oct. 2002) for which he was awarded his 12th Dove award. “Cartoons are my life,” he explains wryly, “seriously I most love working with film and animation.” From the summer of 2002 into 2003 David worked on scoring a Christmas musical for Next Stage, an international staging company. “It’s been Christmas for about a whole year in the Mullen family!” he says laughingly. That’s because he and his wife have only just put the finishing touches on her September release “Christmas in Black and White” Most recently Mullen has been restoring an old recording studio in the historic district of Franklin, TN that he purchased with CCM veteran Toby McKeehan (Toby Mac, DC Talk). The studio (called The Co-Op) is also a joint venture with R&B/CCM label Goatee Records and music veteran mix man Bryan Lenox. “We have always dreamed of having a place together…a Co-Op,” he says with a twinkle in his eyes, “but man this restoration business is a lot of work!” Whatever else it may be, we’re sure the work will be Excellent.
