The handsome couple on my background are FRED (the robot) and GINGER (the mannequin), drawn as "mascots" for Costume-Con 1 by esteemed S/F writer Greg Bear (who is also quite a good artist!).
Hi, I'm Karen Dick, founding chairman and Service Mark Holder for Costume-Con. This convention started as a "one-shot" in 1983 and just celebrated a 25-year run in 2007(!). Costume-Con started as a "spinoff" from general science fiction conventions, but ALL kinds of costumes are welcome--science fiction, fantasy, media-based, anime, historical, you name it. If you love designing, making, wearing, or photographing costumes, or are interested in fiber arts, surface manipulation of fabric, beading, quilting, corsetry, dolls, recreations from anime or media sources, etc. you need to attend this convention!
Costume-Con features competitions where you can show off your latest work, classes where you can learn new techniques, and other events where you can just hang out, meet people with like interests, and socialize.
Costume-Con travels around the country, so there's a chance it might be near you sometime soon:
2008--San Jose, CA
2009--Baltimore, MD
2010--(Just voted in!) Milwaukee, WI
2011--(bid) New Jersey
2012--(official bid) Pittsburgh, PA (30th anniversary)
For archival information and LOTS OF PHOTOS from past Costume-Cons, plus information on how to bid for one, go to WWW.COSTUME-CON.ORG .
For information about current and future Costume-Cons and click-through links to their web sites, go to WWW.COSTUME-CON.COM .
Costume-Con congratulates JACQUI WARD for being the 2007 winner of the Costume-Con "Founder's Award." Based on NASCAR-type ratings (where you get points for entering competitions as well as winning them), Jacqui is the BEST OVERALL COSTUMER after 25 years of Costume-Con competitions, hands down!
