About Me

Rich Podgur began his musical career in the position described by Levon Helm as "the best seat in the house" — that of a drummer. But even while keeping the beat for Massachusetts-based Motherless Children, Rich showcased his versatility, providing both backup and lead vocals for the four-piece rock ‘n’ roll band. After the lead guitarist joined the military, Rich decided to head to the opposite coast and took up residence in southern California. Here, he focused on percussion, playing congas and timbales with acts as diverse as songwriter Carl Stewart, the 12-piece Mr. Ectomy and the five-piece Dale Carey Band. Surrounded by accomplished players in all groups, Rich developed an insatiable appetite for the art of song and the power of words, particularly poetry. He reversed his cross-country move, heading back to Boston to attend the Berklee College of Music. During this period, Rich met Jonathan Chi and John Paul Mclean, two gentlemen who continue to play a prominent role in his musical development. With a stronger voice and an armful of songs, Rich crossed the country once more and began playing shows throughout northern and southern California. He took a break from teaching and playing to spend a year in the Normandie region of France. While there, Rich immersed himself in the local culture, including its music. He played shows throughout the region, sharing the stage and drinks with of some of the area’s most talented musicians. The year in France over, Rich finds himself once again living in southern California, where he continues to play gigs and teach music. Rich is now writing songs for an album he expects to begin recording in June. With the exception of “So Long California,” the songs posted here are scratch recordings of a few ideas. Songs from the upcoming album will be posted as soon as they're complete. Please stay tuned.
