About Me

MAPLE PALM - Movie Synopsis:
A lesbian couple of fifteen years lives with the secret that one is an illegal immigrant. With no way to legalize their relationship, they live in fear of deportation. After an innocent visit to the Statue of Liberty, the girls return to L.A.; unaware that this icon of freedom, was about to strip them of their own.
REVIEWS:
"...its clever dismantling of borders, both nationally and otherwise... sneaks past checkpoints of comedy and tragedy, romance and thrills, to find a dramatically legitimate home for the film's sincere agenda." --Frontiers Magazine
"...a suspense thriller melodrama with a larger message in mind... a fireworks display..." --The Los Angeles Times
"...a commendable attempt to provoke a conversation about an aspect of the gay-marriage debate that the religious right frequently chooses to ignore - that, far from being just a moral issue, straight couples have a concretely different set of legal privileges than gay couples." --Los Angeles CityBeat Available on DVD July 3, 2007

PLOT: What if the love you cherished could be ripped from you, and there's nothing you could do to stop it? If a gay American falls in love with a foreigner, there's no legal way for the couple to stay together. The choices are dire – live apart from the one you love, live together as fugitives, or flee the U.S. in search of freedom in one of sixteen countries that support same-sex immigration. Such is the story of Nicole and Amy in Maple Palm. A lesbian couple of fifteen years living with the secret that one is an illegal immigrant. When their secret is exposed, the girls must choose -- fight to stay together, or let bureaucracy tear them apart. This intense dramatic feature exposes the harsh reality of nonexistent same-sex immigration protections in the United States, and the ruthless ambivalence bi-national couples are forced to endure. What would YOU sacrifice to be with the one you love?

MAPLE PALM features Original Music by:
REBECCA HANSEN and KATY J.

Rebecca Hansen MP3 Samples:
" Long As I Live "
" With Your Love "
" Your Love Amazes Me "
Rebecca Hansen- part of the vision for Maple Palm was to reclaim imagery and symbolism hijacked by those who assert proprietorship over all that's patriotic or wholesome. Rebecca, a devout Christian, was immediately intrigued by the notion of contributing music of a religious context to a film focused on a lesbian love story. Her self-released album, "Walk With Me," features many tracks that are essentially love songs to God, yet when played within the context of Maple Palm, the lyrics take on a profound duality in meaning and infuse the plot with intimacy yet circumvent an often bitter ideological divide by depicting a universal story about the human spirit.

Katy J. MP3 Samples:
" Maybe "
" Stand Still "
" Always More "
Katy J. - a distinct contrast to the rest of the score, Katy J's edge is the ideal counterpart to the film's gritty subject matter. One of the key themes in the film is "Glen's" inner conflict and mental turmoil. To complement this, Katy's songs underscore scenes where "Glen" is dominant or in power, while Rebecca's music underscores the women's love and relationship. The result is a soundtrack that's as dynamic as the film's subject matter, and as extreme as the polarized views on gay issues within the public at large.

MAPLE PALM stars:

DEBORAH STEWART (Nicole) - Deborah was immediately attracted to the role of Nicole as she felt this was an important issue of the heart: "Maple Palm was a very intense shoot for me. We shot the entire film in 2 weeks and I got about 4 hours of sleep a night! I loved every minute of working on this film as I got to express the many different emotions of Nicole. Before reading this script, I was not aware of the lack of immigration opportunities for same sex couples in the United States. I appreciated the experience of bringing this character and issue to the awareness of others."

TAYMOUR GHAZI (Glen) - "Brought on to this picture, I held my expectations high. All my expectations were fulfilled. Ralph Torjan and Robert J. Feldman have brought to life a poignant tale of everyday absurdity. Maple Palm is a story of crucial importance. It is in my utmost honesty that every American should see this. Maybe some ignorance can finally be extinguished and we can proceed with smiles instead of guns and hatred. Same sex marriage and Immigration has an uphill battle, but with stories like Maple Palm, maybe we can look forward to a potential change."

ANDREA CARVAJAL (Amy) - Andrea came to this project with great enthusiasm for the material. "Firstly, it is original in subject matter and long overdue for exposure. Secondly, the role of Amy was an amazing character study. I enjoy every opportunity to portray a complex character so seemingly unlike myself, only to reveal we have so much in common at the core. I found Amy's strength of personality within the bounds of her situation inspiring. I hope others will too."

ROBERT J. FELDMAN (Billy) - "Maple Palm is an original, one of a kind story, with several elements drama, comedy and pathos. But it's a compelling, contemporary love story, unique, due to the social relevance and controversy built into it. As there are over 100,000 bi-national couples being torn apart or living similar situations like Nicole and Amy does in our film. This is the 21st century; human rights should be way beyond where it stands right now. History repeats itself, but we still never learn. I just hope Maple Palm builds a momentum of public awareness that will ultimately lead to change the system for the better."

LYNDA LEFEVER (Mom) - "I am honored to be a part of a film project that embraces acceptance of all forms of relationship and brings home the heartbreak of not being accepted and honored in that loving relationship. This film brings forward the issues of the heart. How is it okay to fall in love with a 'non-citizen' or even buy a bride from another country, get married and the relationship is fully honored as well as being granted citizenship, except when it comes to same-sex loving relationships? Open your hearts and see this film, for our world needs everyone on board to promote and embrace one another."
