About Me

Check out my store: www.RBGyrl.etsy.comMoving to New York to pursue journalism, I was unfulfilled with what was around me. Starting to feel uninspired with my situation, I was starving for a creative outlet. While working across the street from Smiley's Yarns in Queens I decided to teach myself the art of crochet.Sakir Designs was born in the Spring of 2001 and in Fall 2001 my creations were found in Love Thang in Canarsie, Brooklyn. Throughout the next few years I would market myself by placing my designs in Almighty E and then opening my own store in the Harlem Market during the Summer of 2004, participating in a Styleholics shopping event, introducing the streets of Soho to my world and having a stay in Pieces of Brooklyn. I then moved my designs to Nicholas of Harlem on 5th Ave and 125th. For the next two years Harlem was home to some of the hottest creations. The Summer of 2006 seemed to be a summer of movement. Sakir Designs officially changed it's name to Revolutionary Black Gyrl (RBGyrl) and showcased at the newest location, Nicholas of Brooklyn. All of my designs are inspired by my daily travels. I incorporate many cultures into my designs: African, Caribbean, Native American, Latino and Asian. My items range from many different styled hats, contemporary-designed bags, earrings, ties, etc. Revolutianary Black Gyrl can be found in Brooklyn, NY at Nicholas located on 560 Fulton Street in the old Nubian Heritage building and on clients from California,New York,Florida to Japan. My motto: "Don't hope for it, work for it!"
