Guess Why

Hard enough for boys, sweet enough for girls!!!

About Me

Guess Why was formed in September 1993 in Buk near Pozna by: Przemysaw 'Pera' Wejmann (guitar, vocals, lyrics) and Roman 'Kostek' Kostrzewski (drums), both playing in a metal band Repostor at the same time. A few days later two other musicians joined the newly formed band: Pawe 'Paulus' Czubek from Delirium Tremens (bass) and Piotr 'Piciu' Przybylski (keyboards, back-up vocals). For the first two years the band rehearsed and played many concerts alongside various groups throughout the country. This turned out to be an essential period for the whole band, as Guess Why gained their first experiences on stage and kept focused on their musical search during the rehearsals. All rigid barriers and limitations imposed by the metal-punk mainstream, which dominated in former groups, were abandoned altogether, and the band concentrated on their search for the new forms of expression. In October 1995 Guess Why played in Hannover on the Rock For Jobs festival. Straight after that, the band played a series of concerts in Poland as a support for Apatia. In November 1995 the debut MC Gift was released by the Mami Tapes record company from Pozna. In May 1996 Guess Why won the first prize at the Rock Spring Festival in Nowa Sl, Poland. During the next year the group was involved in touring with Sweet Noise and many other bands. In February 1997 Guess Why gained support from the community center in Opalenica, where the band was able to organize rehearsals and became active alongside Agencja ArtystycznaTaklamakan (Artistic Agency). In September 1997 the band was qualified to play at the European festival European Rock Prize - Athens '97 (Greece), and it ended up among 10 groups selected out of 550 tapes sent from all over Europe. The concert, which took place in the sold-out Lycabettus Theater in front of the audience of 5000 people, was at the same time a support for the number-one star of the evening - All Star Band (Mick Taylor - ex- Rolling Stones, Alvin Lee, Snowhy White, John Mayal, Jeff Allen, Rick Wakemann and others), and the festival itself turned out to be a great motivation and inspiration for Guess Why.The November of 1997 was a lucky month for Guess Why. First, the band won one of the main prizes at the annual Rock & Roll Festival in Szczecin, Poland - a free recording session in the Cosmos recording studio in Szczecin. Secondly, Guess Why was the runner-up at the Wolna Scena Rocka (Free Rock Scene) festival in Krakw, Poland.}In June 1998 the band took part in the Varran from Comodo Tour '98 as a support for Acid Drinkers. During the next months, Guess Why was involved in preparations for the recording of their debut album. In October 1998 Pera (guitars, vocals) joined Acid Drinkers and replaced Litza, who decided to quit the band. This, however, did not affect Guess Why in any respect; on the contrary, all of the sudden the band found itself in the public eye.In January / February 1999 the band entered the studio to record their debut album, Coffee Time, released by the Metal Mind Productions record company. It was recorded in the rehearsals room at Taklamakan and at Larronerma Recording Institute in Pozna, under the supervision of Jacek Chraplak. The album was released in March 1999.Throughout the next two years the band concentrated on creating new material and rehearsed regularly, taking part in several concerts as well.In the period April - August 2001 Guess Why recorded their second album Road to the Horizon, officially released on October 30, 2001. Once again, it was published by the Metal Mind Productions record company. The album was recorded at: Kino Wielkopolanin in Buk, the rehearsals room at Taklamakan in Opalenica, and L. R. I. Studio in Pozna, and recorded and produced by Jacek Chraplak and Guess Why.In the meantime Jacek Milaszewski joined the group of people acting under the aegis of Guess Why - an acoustician and the band's 'link' to the Internet, unofficially - a close friend and a spiritual prop. Few months later Jacek introduced Maciej Makowicz to Guess Why. Maciej soon became the manager of the group. In February 2002 the album Road to the Horizon was hailed as 'The Album of the Year 2001' in the hard & heavy category by the CGM 30TON readers. In April 2002 Guess Why was awarded a Fryderyk in the heavy metal category, which proved that the record gained the recognition of the music trade as well. Throughout the years 2002/2003 the group gave several dozen concerts in Poland during which Guess Why enjoyed a warm reception from the audience. The year 2002 was entirely devoted to creating and recording the new material for the third album entitled The Plan of Escape. The album was recorded in Studio Taklamakan - a recording studio in Opalenica. Przemyslaw 'Perla' Wejmann was the sound engineer as well as the producer of the album. The material was mixed by Przemyslaw and Jacek Milaszewski. There are eleven new tracks on the record. Grzegorz 'Guzik' Guzinski (a musician known from groups: Flapjack and Homosapiens) and Mariusz 'Gobas' Szypura (Silver Rocket and ex Happy Pills) made a guest appearance. Though the album differs widely from the group's former achievements, the changes are not that profound and you can still recognize the same band. The album is stronger on melody, there are more 'sung' vocals and the rhythms are less intricate. The tone of the whole material is somewhat more austere and heavy. The album was released on 29th November 2004 by the Metal Mind Records. We regret to inform you that on September the 13th 2007 Guess Why officially withdrew from activity. We would like to give thanks to everyone who helped us and believed in us for 14 years. Life goes on and we do not know what may happen in our musical future.
