Do the chickens have large talons?

About Me

4th-generation native San Franciscan from a big, tight-knit, and funny Irish family (part Hawaiian too, through dad). Some things about me: I grew up in the Sunset District, so I love the fog. I completely live for and love music (play drums, bass & guitar quite seriously). All kinds of music appeal to me. If you're a woman, and you told me you could not live without listening to Bill Frisell, Zappa, Mahler, Eric Dolphy, Television, Tool, or the French band, Magma, I'd probably want to marry you . . . on the spot. (Offer not binding in CA, NV, or TX) I love exploring the outdoors, and am a serious mountaineer and snow-camper (I will climb Denali next May). A smart-ass. I love cats. Sierra Club member and volunteer (card-carrying)--e.g., I guide kids on winter snow-camping trips. I read a lot. I don't watch much t.v. (except for the Simpsons, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and, sometimes, trashy "my dignity's for sale" late-night dating shows on KRON). I love football. Some fools think I'm funny, and I crave (and collect) great comedy (Bill Hicks is my favorite). Richard Pryor taught me both the birds and the bees, and how to curse, and all at the same time. I religiously listen to NPR. Open-minded and anti-Republican. Well-educated. I have very close friends here that I have known for almost 30 years, which is awesome. I am a good cook, but love to eat out. I cannot live without Peet's lattes, even if they can live without all of the money I give them. A law-talking guy during the week. A certain friend named Alexander is, by the way, a major fucking wise-guy.

My Interests

Music, concerts, mountain-climbing, drinking red wine (Chateauneuf du Pape!!) . . .

I'd like to meet:

Anyone friendly, guy or gal, who really loves music. Or 420. Or both, in either order. (Being semi-facetious here, gang.) Now, as for a significant other, I would like to meet a smart, funny gal, who loves the arts and the outdoors. I especially dig so-called "nerdy" girls. Someone who wants to travel and explore. If she can really make me laugh, I will come to adore her (unless she's just laughing at me). She should be willing to spontaneously disappear for the weekend on a road trip to the Sierras or Cascades. She cares about the world around her. I am active and energetic--that's either an invitation, or a warning, I'm not sure which. Oh yeah, did I mention the 420?VOTE GREEN PEOPLE, literally and figuratively.I am a member of the "prog meets hippy jam band" band from San Francisco called the ToneDrones. Check us out on MySpace. By the way, I had nothing to do with picking the name.

Music:

I play 3 instruments: drums for 25 years, bass for 21 years, and the guitar for about 3 years. Entirely self-taught. I love writing and playing music. It's been my life-long passion, and will assuredly remain so until I check out from this rock. I am also constantly listening to music. Generally, the louder and nastier, the better . . . except for Wilco. I especially love the music of Eric Dolphy, the Beatles, Primus, Television, Bill Frisell, King Crimson, System of a Down, Barenaked Ladies, Blue Oyster Cult, Magma, Bill Bruford's Earthworks, Rush, Iron Maiden, Jimi Hendrix, Wilco, Tool, and anything Zappa . . . to name a few.Other favorites include: Mission of Burma, Kaki King, Andrew Hill, Flaming Lips, Eric Kloss, Joni Mitchell, Professor Longhair, Henry Kaiser, Future Sound of London, Eric Johnson (Electromagnets), Fred Frith, Henry Cow, Genesis, Sonic Youth, Albert Ayler, Jeff Beck, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Nels Cline, early Metallica, Gomez, Prokofiev, Pigpen, Shostakovich, Adrian Legg, John Coltrane, Yes, Bob Dylan, early King's X, Mr. Bungle, Captain Beefheart, Ali Farka Toure, Steve Reich, Leo Kottke, AC/DC, Mozart, Patti Smith, Ornette Coleman, Massacre, Perfect Circle

Movies:

Dr. Strangelove, Spinal Tap, Up in Smoke, Alien, Clockwork Orange, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Good, The Bad & the Ugly, Monty Python's Holy Grail, Me, Myself & Irene, Blade Runner, There's Something About Mary, anything Star Wars, and anything from Terry Gilliam

Television:

I don't watch much T.V. I don't have cable, so my T.V. gets a whopping 5 local channels (and I like it that way!). If I do watch T.V., it's PBS, the Simpsons, pro football, college hoops, MLB post-season, or some silly late-night talk-show (Kimmel and Ferguson crack me up). I'd rather watch older stuff on DVD, and greats sets include all seasons of Mr. Show, Arrested Development, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Chappelle's Show.

Books:

David Sedaris and Anthony Bourdain lately. Nietzsche's "La Gaya Scienza," Hannah Arendt's "The Human Condition," Jon Krakauer's "Into Thin Air," early George Orwell, anything Wittgenstein, linguistics, constitutional theory, and other assorted mega-book-nerd magnets.

Heroes:

Bill Hicks, Frank Zappa, Bill Bruford, Tony Levin, Jeff Tweedy, Richard Pryor, Anatoli Boukreev, Mark Twain, Eugene Debs, Charles Darwin, Agent Smith (kiddin'), Matt Groening, Richard Feynman. And, of course, mom.
