Mercedes Thurlbeck was born in New York City to creative parents. Her mother a writer and her father a renowned New York artist. She grew up immersed in the post-modern art world of her father's studio, watching him paint, and painting along side him. At age 7, Mercedes moved to California with her family, where she has been living and studying since. At age 14 she had open heart surgery which not only changed her life, but later became a heavy influence on her work. She creates dynamic work using imagery from instructional and medical phamplets, bluring the line between the internal and external of the human body. Using the media of paint, photography, and occasionally video, her work discusses sexuality, modern feminism and human behavior. She's an emerging artist, who despite her young age has already had her work shown alongside such notables as Mark Ryden, Shag and Liz McGrath. Most recently, she's been working as a still photographer and webmaster for the feature film LolliLove (Jenna Fischer, James Gunn, Stephen Blackehart, Peter Alton)
