Starkstrom aus Schweden - Klezmerski dynamit

About Me

"(...) This is raw, noisy klezmer played by a band who would be at home in any village square, unamplified. There is no Yiddish theatre music or folk music here, just solid, thumping dance music, propelled by a solid thumping drum kit, good for klezmer, for polkas, good anywhere that a gaggle of loud, reasonably coherent kapelye would be welcome. These are the true children, not only of those old '78s by the Kandel Orchestra, but also of the madcap, fun-loving original Klezmer Revival band, the Klezmorim. Listen to the band's own "Farshtinkener Boris" with solos ranging from banjo to accordion to tuba. This is rollicking fun."
CD Tarrschwein reviewed by Ari Davidow (Klezmerschack) 6/8/03
"(...) When I listened to their song samples, I was hooked. DFB (as they refer to themselves) has a street-klezmer sound that grabs you and takes hold of your soul. This is joyous, raucous music that spans several genres of Eastern European music. (...) The recording has a great "live" feel to it. Even though this is a studio recording, the band draws you in and the listener feels part of the action. I've listened to this album several times and each time it ends I start it over again, just to hear a little bit more.If your taste leans toward brass/woodwind klezmer do yourself a favor and give Shuff! a listen. You can thank me later."

Music:

Band Website: denflygandebokrullen.nu
Band Members: Matti Pohjola - cornet, baryton, mandolin, banjo / Gustav Johansson - accordeon, baryton, trombone / Lars Ydgren - clarinet, alto sax / Carl Johansson - drums, baryton / Arvid Petterson - baryton, piano / Thomas Dawidowski - tuba, double bass. The members can also sometimes be heard live and/or on records with e.g. Patrik Kolar & his funky friends, Club Killers, Laleh, Ane Brun, Weltklang, Süperstar Orkestar, The Pohjolas and Nova Express.
Influences: Den Flygande Bokrullen has followed the traditions of klezmer music and let our music get some colour from the group members' own musical favourites and preferences. For example, we play many greek tunes, just like the revival-pioneer group Klezmorim did on their first record. The Hasaposerviko, for example, mixes well with klezmer music because of its energy and jolliness.
Sounds Like: This irreverent band sounds like nothing else.DFB released its first CD in December 96, second album "20th Century Klezmer" in November 98. An EP "electronic ep" was released June 5 2000. The third album, Tarrschwein, was released in April 2002.The fourth album "Shuff!" was released September 23 2007.Den flygande bokrullen and other albums released by ARKO Records are distributed world wide by CDA (www.cda.se).
