About Me
On Fire Sound is the name of the Basel-Birmingham collective consisting of DJ Drop, Lukee, D-Double, Daylight, Griot, Messenger Douglas, Pocketsize Levi & P.E.N.S.A.! Basels Kuppel is its home base and where On Fire Nights take place on the first Friday of every month, including guests from both Switzerland and elsewhere. On Fire Sound was started in 2001 by Lukee and DJ Drop and, after a few successful gigs, presented its first mixtape On Fire Volume 1 already in November of 2002. Volume 1 sold out completely in only three months and was the first Swiss mixtape to be hosted in both Swiss German dialect and Patois. Splicing and blending mixtapes quickly became one of On Fires staples and March of 2003 already saw the release of a follow-up. On Fire Volume II went on sale through Hiphopstore.ch and found its way onto the shelves of stores all across Switzerland. Around the same time, www.on-fire.ch was born. Shortly afterwards, On Fire joined forces with the young label MM-E (distributed by EMI Music) to hit the Swiss market with its first official dancehall/reggae compilation: On Fire Volume I The CD. On Fire Sounds growing fame soon called for some reinforcements and towards the end of 2003, partnerships were forged with Carhartt (www.carhartt-europe.ch), Yummy Industries (www.yummy.ch), WB-Tal Booking and Numark (www.numark.com). During an event at Basels Kaserne, DJ Drop and Lukee happened to meet the reggae singer Messenger Douglas from Birmingham (on the road with Overproof Soundsystem at the time) and handed him a copy of On Fire Volume II to take back to England. Two days later, the phone lines between Birmingham and Basel were red hot Messenger Douglas was impressed by the On Fire sound. The result of this was an e-pen friendship bent on bringing Messenger Douglas and On Fire together one day. The first opportunity was quick to show up: In January of 2004, Basels first sound clash took place. On Fire Sound performed at the clash together with Messenger Douglas and a friend of his, Daylight. It turned out to be a long night during which the On Fire combo disposed of seven other soundsystems and was crowned with the title of Basels Sound of the Year 2004 or, as some like to call it, Champion Sound. Since that night, a close friendship has developed between Basel and Birmingham: Daylight performs in Switzerland on a regular basis when On Fire is on tour and has helped them become one of Switzerlands most in-demand soundsystems. Today, On Fire performs with national and international Big Names of the dancehall/reggae scene (including Sir David Rodigan, Goldrush International, Wayne Wonder, Boss Hi-Fi, Spragga Benz, Kevin Lyttle, Calibe and many more). Together with Daylight and Messenger Douglas, On Fire Sound has hauled a fresh webmaster on board: P.E.N.S.A. (www.pensa.info), whos been taking care of On Fires website ever since. A long-time friend of Lukee has also discovered a taste for reggae and dancehall through On Fires sound: Griot a.k.a. Brewz Bana (www.nocode.ch) enriching On Fires live shows on the mic since June of 2004.
