CARIBOU
Doors - 8 pm
From its humble beginnings with the theft of a sampler gathering dust in his high school’s music department, through four acclaimed albums and an absurd collision with a litigious wrestler, Dan Snaith’s (aka Caribou) musical life has followed anything but a predictable trajectory. As hinted at by the aforementioned penchant for abducting musical electronics, Dan began recording music in the solitary environs of rural Ontario, Canada when only 14 years old – “Before I could drive, and living in the middle of nowhere in the countryside, there weren’t many options aside from practicing music, playing music and recording music all in complete isolation’”, Dan explains – but it wasn’t until the release of his debut album Start Breaking My Heart – then under the artist name Manitoba – on the UK based Leaf Label that anyone noticed. His debut was praised worldwide as a unique statement in electronic music, fusing hopscotch melodies and filtered electronic sunshine with influences as diverse as the spiritual free jazz of the early 70s, North American indie music of the 90s and the post acid house UK techno.

Fri, Apr 25 & Sat, Apr 26 - The El Rey – $29 adv, $33 d.o.s.

DARK STAR ORCHESTRA
Doors - 8 pm
Using entire shows from the Grateful Dead's 30 years of extensive touring as a launching pad, Dark Star Orchestra recreates the original song for song performance set list for an entirely new generation of, as well as old school, Deadheads. Dark Star Orchestra presents its critically acclaimed live show at esteemed venues from coast to coast and internationally. Dark Star Orchestra performs Grateful Dead classics in the same way that an orchestra interprets music of classical composers. The composer spirit is derived and channeled as the players capture the excitement and innovation of the original performances and compositions. Touring nationwide for nine years to the tune of nearly 1500 shows since forming, the band's determined commitment to "raising the Dead" has drawn national media attention. Precision is king with DSO; the band adapts their stage positioning, vocal arrangements, specific musical equipment and instruments to fit the era of the show they are performing. Following each performance the band announces the date and venue of the original performance. Dark Star Orchestra could dip into any incarnation of the dead at any of their shows, allowing fans to experience shows that happened long before they were born.

I’M FROM BARCELONA
Doors - 8 pm
Fueled by love and vacation, Emanuel Lundgren writes a couple of explosive happy pop songs and decides to gather all his friends to put them on tape. His apartment turns into a friendly factory as people come and go loaded with banjos, accordions and kazoos. Some weeks (and lifetime memories) later, a homemade EP is finished and Emanuel collects almost all the 29 participants for a first and last live show in August 2005. What he thought was an ending was a beginning of numerous rumours and talk about this new and exciting band. One show soon turned into plenty. Swedish media goes out of control and bloggers all over the world starts sharing their knowledge about the Swedish big band. In only a couple of months more than 20 000 people have downloaded songs from the bands website. The EP "Don..t Give Up On Your Dreams, Buddy!" is released on EMI Sweden in early 2006 and is followed up by the full length album "Let Me Intruduce My Friends". A record full of euphoric pop gems and sing-a-long friendly choruses . The anthem "We..re From Barcelona" climbs the charts and the band is headed for a summer of festivals, including Primavera Sound in Barcelona. I..m from Barcelona embraces the do-it-yourself mentality and live it..s hard to say where the band ends and the audience begins. The El Rey is an original art deco theater built in 1936 and is a registered historical landmark.
