Get Code | Create Your Own!..HOW TO MAKE A LIFE LIST!!!Life list. Bucket list. Things to do before you die. Future accomplishments. Call it whatever you want. (The steps to make one are at the end, if you get tired of reading and want to get straight to it).What is the value of making your own “Life List”? Why have a detailed road map to help you live large and realize your dreams? Simple. Actually creating such lists and the thought that is put into them is practically guaranteed to give your life a real kick in the butt – so isn’t it time you made yours?Illness, a relationship ending or some other major life event may cause you to glimpse your own mortality or perhaps recognize your ever-increasing age. You may feel as if you haven’t really experienced all in life that you want to experience. Whatever the reason, the process of beginning a life list is simple and doesn’t take much time.Grab a cocktail napkin, paper bag or just anything to write on and something with which to write (pen, pencil, crayon, mascara, whatever). Start by completely opening up your mind. Begin jotting down all the things you regret (or that you might regret later in life) not doing. Remember, everything is on the table for consideration here, so don’t hold back. It is just you and the paper. Lists can be certainly be random.You may find, initially, that your list is adventurous, cliché, edgy or selfish. Perhaps your list may seem to be all about what you want to do for yourself. That is perfectly acceptable. As you become more comfortable with listing things, try to think of pushing your mind into places where it has never ventured. Life lists can be, but do not have to be, about extremes, such as walking the wing of a flying airplane, or climbing Mount Everest. Lists can also be about adventures within yourself and making a mental leap of letting go and allowing yourself to grow by sometimes being insecure and uncomfortable. Just remember that you should never take on more than you are willing and that you should feel and be in control of your own safety and wellbeing.Throughout time, ambitious women and men have written similar plans for themselves. Lots of people have busily laid groundwork for achieving fantastic goals. In almost every case of successful people there is a realization that they would be hard pressed to accomplish much without these indispensable road maps.Some people are comfortable by writing down their “Top 10”, 50 things or “100 Things To Do Before I Die” – a personal “bucket list (as in kick the bucket). The important thing to remember is that your list does not have to limited by a set number of items or ever be finished. It can change. Things can be added or taken off your list. The second most important thing is to formulate the list. The most important thing is to go about doing the things on your list and thereby grow personally.Writing down your life list will help keep you from putting off doing all the great things you want to do, all the great places you want to visit and keep your ambitions front and center. It will also lead to you meeting like-minded people, who enjoy the things that you enjoy.The ultimate rule for making a life list is that there are no rules. They can be business related, educational, personal, a combination of these or other things. Visualizing the challenge and the steps necessary to meet a specific goal on the list may be helpful. Don’t shy away from difficult tasks. Remember, many people with the “best” life lists sometimes encounter adversity along the way. This does not mean that you should not establish “sensible goals.” There is absolutely nothing wrong with goals that allow personal growth and positive life experiences.So remember, all you need is something to write with, something to write on, and plenty of ambitious dreams – not to mention the nerve to go out and live them. Here are some steps to follow:1.) Block out a few hours of time that you can devote exclusively to thinking about all the things you’ve ever wanted to do, but have never quite gotten around to.2.) Start y jotting down everything that comes to mind. Don’t censor yourself; you can edit it down later.3.) Don’t stop if your ideas seem ridiculous (orbiting the earth), improbable (meeting the head of the United Nations) or too lame to put on the list (learning to drive a stick shift). Just keep thinking and writing.4.) Once you’ve written down every possible goal, organize them. Make a list of categories such as travel, personal achievements, relationships, charity, adventure, possessions, and sports. These categories should be custom tailored to fit your own interests.5.) Move all the items into the appropriate categories, then look through each category list and use it as a springboard for more ideas.6.) Do some pruning and editing, rethinking the utterly impossible – but keeping the intensely unlikely if you are comfortable doing so. There is no “right” length for a list. Some people have a hundred items on their list; others have five or six hundred. And you don’t ever have to “finish” all the tasks; lists can grow and change throughout your life.7.) When your initial list is done, you’ve made a contract with yourself. It might not be legally binding, but if you put the list in a drawer or close the computer file/document and don’t bother following through on your commitments, you might wind up missing out on some essential life-defining experiences. So keep your list front and center, carry it around with you, post it on your refrigerator or on your wall at home – whatever keeps you moving forward toward a wonderful, fulfilling life!Good luck! Now get to work and get out there!{Adapted, in part, from an excellent longer article by (and my profound and unending thanks to) Michael Kaplan}
