I am a mother of two girls, 9 & 17. I am an administrator of an Internet based organization called Justice for Juveniles. We are a group of concerned citizen trying to change the laws adjudicating children as adults. We believe children are never adults and should not be tried in adult court. Politicians and legislators get re-elected by spreading fear about child predators and using slogans such as "tough on crime". In fact, laws that try children as adults and subjecting them to mandatory minimum sentences such as LWOP, make the public less safe. Studies show that prison is not a deterrent for juveniles. In fact it is just the opposite; children who go to adult prison, re-offend sooner, more often and in worse ways. Also, Juveniles in prison are in danger of physical and sexual abuse by other inmates and guards and are twice as likely to commit suicide. A child's brain is not developed in the areas of judgement, impulse, and decision-making until into their 20's. A child does not have the capacity of an adult and should not be held to adult standards when they have comitted a crime. The only time a child is treated as an adult in this country is when they commit a crime. Children should be treated as juveniles and get the help they need through community based services not be given adult prison sentences for the purpose of revenge and retribution.
