About Me
DJ Maarten Patrik first caught the dance music fever back during the time that disco raged. He first became interested in the Philly sound while working as a DJ for a community college radio station in Chicago. DJ Doris T, whom he did a show with told him about the up-and-coming sounds of TSOP, and how it would become a huge new type of music. A few years later he decided to take his DJ skills to the nightclub, blending a vareity of disco tunes and R&B.

A Look Back
Back in the 80s, at a time when house music was first beginning to shape the
dance floor with its gritty and fresh sounds that captured the feet of dance-floor
denizens around the world, Offbeat Magazine was formed.
Using desktop publishing software, and with a small budget but big heart, the magazine was formed in the dining room with the first issue hitting the record stores in Chicago on Dec. 15, 1986. Working 12-16 hours a day during the Thanksgiving holiday, I designed the first issue using a Macintosh computer.
Although I took a short break to celebrate the holoday that weekend, work continued frantically in order to meet my printer's deadline of Dec. 1. When the magazine hit the stands on Dec. 15, more than 1,700 copies were distributed througout the Chicago area, in record stores such as Gramaphone, Importes Etc., and Loop Records. Free of charge, the magazine included record reviews, charts, and articles about DJ technologies such as drum machines.
In the first issue, I wrote the following:
Hello.....and welcome to the first issue of OFFBEAT , a monthly magazine a monthly music magazine for both DJs and those who simply love dance music. The idea for the magazine came to me several months ago. I felt that although there were several Chicago-based publications available to the mixing professional, they really just skimmed the surface of available record material. Certain types of music (like house, the New York sound and hi-energy) just weren't being covered as well as they should be. Or take for example DJ equipment (Mixers, turntables, drum machines, keyboards etc.) While there is a great deal of interest in this topic, I know of no monthly dance music publication that covers it.
After much discussion with numerous people, I found out they felt the same way. And with much encoragement here we are with the preimer issue (FINALLY)
This magazine is for YOU. I encourage you to call our offices and let us know what you think.
I want to thank everyone who has been involved with putting together this first issue. Thanks to Paul Tolson, Andre Jack Starling, Michael Fowler, Charles Williams of Importes Etc, and editors Bob Kolbey and Brian Kuhr.
Below is a glimpse of some of the major articles we covered. More to follow.
